Wind unable to stop JHS track and field from getting better

May 8—If the Carrington Kiwanis Track and Field Invite would have been set to the tune of a song, it would have undoubtedly be, Bob Seger's, "Against the Wind."

"The word of the day was 'wind,'" Jamestown High School co-head track and field coach Ken Gardner said. "Today was the worst we've had in a long time. One of our sprint coaches checked and it was 37 miles per hour at one point. It's tough to perform at your best when it is like that especially when you are competing out there for five hours.

"I thought the kids did a good job at maintaining focus and putting out their best effort for the day."

The Jays best effort wound up putting them on top of the podium.

Both the Blue Jay girls and boys track and field teams took home championship titles Saturday with the girls earning 350 team points while the guys notched 287 through the 19 events. Gardner and the squad will be back in action on Tuesday at Charlotte and Gordon Hansen Stadium on the University of Jamestown's campus.

Jamestown is expecting Kindred and Wahpeton to travel west for the Jays' second true-team format meet of the year. Events are slated to begin at 3 p.m.

While the squad did notch the top-spots in Carrington, Gardner said the weather was not favorable in earning personal best times, distances or heights throughout the day. Still, the head coach said a number of athletes used the meet as an opportunity to get more reps and experience before the West Region Meet on May 20 and the state track and field meet scheduled for May 26-28 at the Bismarck Community Bowl.

"The results might not show that our kids had a lot of PRs or anything like that but again, you get out and you use it as training," Gardner said. "If you are running against the wind, it's like you are running uphill and you use it as a workout and try to get better."

Even with the wind though, the Jays proved themselves in several different events.

"Devin Beach qualified for the state meet in the triple jump this season," Gardner said. "The 4x100 meter relay ran under 45 seconds and the first and second legs were going into the wind the whole way so to come out with a time that fast was nice."

Beach hit the 41 foot, 6 inch mark in triple jump while the 4x100 finished the 0.25 miles in 44.92 seconds. Preston Kroeber already qualified to the state meet in the 300 meter hurdles, but the senior managed to gain a new PR in the event, finishing the race in 41.66 seconds.

Mag Cummings, a freshman for the Jays, was not all that far behind Kroeber, finishing in sixth place with a time of 43.66 seconds. In the throws, Thomas Allmer collected first place honors in shot and discus. Jacoby Traut, another Jamestown freshman, took second in javelin, with a throw of 143 feet, 5 inches.

"That's a really good throw for someone that young — that's a great place for him to be right now," Gardner said. "It was nice to see those guys get out there and compete and not let the wind be a reason to not work hard."

It wasn't just the boys who were battling.

Allysah Larson, a sophomore for the Jays, notched state qualifying times in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dash. The sophomore came in second in the 100, 0.49 seconds behind Yolanda Nabwe who won the event with a time of 12.31 seconds. Larson won the 200, crossing the line at 26.40 beating out Nabwe by 0.16 seconds.

Nabwe continued her win-streak in the 100 meter hurdles, breaking the tape at 15.12 seconds.

Annie Nabwe once again proved how unstoppable she is in the throws. The University of Minnesota track and field commit notched wins in the shot, discus and javelin. The senior's 46 foot, 8 inch throw in shot notched her a season record.

Julia Skari, Haylie Hakanson and Hunter Petersen went 2-3-4 in the triple jump contest — all recording marks of more than 33 feet. Hakanson and Petersen placed second and third in high jump, both clearing the bar at 4 feet, 9 inches.

"We'll just keep improving and hoping for that perfect day," Gardner said. "We'll get some fresh legs and fresh arms and hopefully it will all come together."
