Windham senior long jumper Mikiylen Jones, Mogadore 4x800 qualify for state
Mikiylen Jones couldn't celebrate right away.
The Windham senior long jumper first had to await the results from faraway Chillicothe, Port Clinton and Troy.
When those results came in, Jones had secured the first of two wild-card berths to the state meet in the long jump after taking fifth at the Perry Regional with a mark of 20 feet, 8.25 inches/
Per Bombers coach Dougle Hankins, Jones nearly avoided the suspense with a monstrous jump of over 21 feet, which would have been good for one of the four automatic qualifying spots out of Perry, except that he was called for a foul after stepping out of the side of the pit.
While Windham is sending a jumper to state for the second straight season after Bert Jones qualified in the high jump last season (he'll try to make it again Friday), Mogadore's 4x800-meter relay secured its own second straight state berth Wednesday.
The quartet of Rachel Whetstone, Brook McIntyre, Amber Morris and Katie Lane took second in Wednesday's Perry regional with a time of 9 minutes, 56.58 seconds.
The Bombers and Wildcats had another placer apiece Wednesday as Mogadore senior Brooklyn Beckford took sixth in the shot put (36-3.50) while Windham senior Hannah Murton finished eighth (34-2.75).
