Meet K9s Xaros and Zuma, the newest additions to the Windsor Police Department.

The department announced the creation of its K9 unit Friday. The unit's first two K9s to join the department are Xaros, a 16-month-old male Belgian Malinois, and Zuma, an 18-month-old male German shepherd. Both dogs came from Poland.

Xaros and Zuma's handlers — Officer Marshal Allen and Officer Clara Steingart, respectively — will spend the next month bonding with their K9 partners before attending training in January, the department said in a news release. Both dogs will be trained as dual-purpose K9s, which means they will be able to detect narcotics and apprehend suspects.

Allen has been with the Windsor Police Department for six years, and Steingart has been with the department since 2018, according to the release.

Fort Collins Police Services, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office and the Loveland Police Department are among other surrounding agencies that have active K9 units.
