Wine tastings back at World Wines in Mentor, while Rustic Grill plans wine-pairing dinner

Mar. 7—The popular Friday wine tastings have returned to World Wines & Liquor, the third-generation family-run beverage store at 8760 Mentor Ave. in Mentor.

Set from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the tastings include six wine samples with two cheeses planned by Wine Director Brian Fife, a certified wine specialist and sommelier. Three reds and three whites are typically poured to those getting their wine glasses at the front of the store.

The wines of John Burke will be poured on March 10. The Lodi, California-area winemaker will pour as he explains his wines, which includes Two Vessels Cabernet Sauvignon. He has family in the Lake County area.

Tastings are first-come-first-served, and only the first 50 tasters will be accommodated. The store also has debuted a draft system for wines — four reds and four whites — at $5 a glass.

Those not interested in wines can check out the store's draft beer system with beers at $5 per glass.

Kathryn Neidus, executive chef at the Rustic Grill at StoneWater Golf Club in Highland Heights, will pair some of her favorite Napa Valley wines with a six-course tasting menu at 7 p.m. March 11 at the open-to-the-public restaurant.

She's recently back from California, where she chose the wines to be shared at the dinner.

After a welcome drink with canapes, guests will feast on Smoked Poached Lobster with shallot herb butter and a papaya and watercress salad, paired with 2018 Palmaz Vineyards Louise Riesling; Uovo in Ravioli with black truffle Parmigiana Reggiano, paired with a 2014 Dolce Late Harvest Sauvignon blanc; Seared Duck Breast with baby root vegetables, cherry mostarda paired with 2018 Ulysses Vineyard red blend; Ribeye Spinalis with pesto pave, Romanesco, mushroom and red wine demi paired with 2018 Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley; Grilled Lamb Chops with delicata squash and doughnut honey herb crème fraiche with 2019 Continuum Proprietary Red Blend; and a dessert of Pomelo Meringue Tart with rosemary crust, served with a 2017 Palmaz Vineyards Muscat Canelli Florencia.

Locally made ice wines are being poured throughout the March Ice Wine Festival at Grand River Valley wineries including Debonné Vineyards, Grand River Cellars Winery & Restaurant, Laurello Vineyards, Cask 307 Winery, South River Vineyards and Red Eagle Distillery. Tastings are available daily for $8 at each winery. There will be special events, and appetizers paired with each ice wine also are served.
