Winfield-Mount Union girls basketball team opens with a pair of road wins

Bradie Buffington, Melina Oepping and Keetyn Townsley combined to score 46 points to help lead Class 1A's 15th-ranked Winfield-Mount Union High School to a 54-24 win over New London in the girls basketball season opener for both teams Friday at Charles Lorber Gymnasium in New London.

Buffington added nine rebounds, five steals, two blocks and two assists for the Wolves, while Oepping had 12 rebounds, 11 steals and two assists and Townsley had four rebounds and four steals.

Also for the Wolves, Anna Anderson had five points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists, Keely Malone had two points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals and Afton Wilkerson had one point and one steal.

Emma Nye leg New London with nine points, while Natalie Burden had eight points and Mylee Miller had five points.

NO. 15 WINFIELD-MOUNT UNION 57, CENTRAL LEE 33: Buffington scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Townsley added 15 points to lead the Wolves past the Lady Hawks at Donnellson on Saturday.

Also for the Wolves, Oepping had eight points and seven rebounds, Josie Nelson had eight points, Anderson had five points, Malone had four points and Aurey Meeker had two points.

Makayla Morrison and Mya Lampe each scored 11 points to lead Central Lee.

DAVIS COUNTY 70, NEW LONDON 28: Burden scored 19 points in the Tigers' home loss to the Mustangs on Saturday.

Also for the Tigers, Nye and Sophie Malott each had three points and Camryn Lair and Miller each scored two points.

MONMOUTH-ROSEVILLE 70, WEST CENTRAL 39: Shelby Bowman scored a team-high 24 points, but the Heat lost to the Titans on Saturday in the Cranberry Classic at Oneida, Illinois.

Also for the Heat, Addie Seitz scored seven points, Sam Meyer and Bailey Ryan each scored three points and Harlee Hainds had two points.
