Wingate executes hardwood sweep at Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) – A massive 31-point first quarter from the visiting Bulldogs ensured an 88-71 victory over the Lady Pioneers on Saturday afternoon.

The two squads opened the game at a frantic pace, combining for 50 points in the first frame.

A strong second quarter from the visitors saw them build a 52-31 lead at halftime. Tusculum out-scored Wingate over the final two quarters, but it wasn’t enough to pull off the comeback.

The Bulldogs’ Emily Hege led all scorers with 23 points, adding six rebounds and six assists to her total.

Tusculum’s Faith Silva was lethal from beyond the arc, swishing home 5-of-10 three-point attempts for 15 points. Carleigh Wilson chalked up a team-high 21 points and added seven rebounds and five assists in defeat.

Greeneville alum Delana DeBusk (11 pts, 5 rebs, 5 asts) also finished in double figures.

Tusculum (3-18, 1-14 SAC) is still searching for its first conference victory of the new calendar year. The team’s next chance comes at Carson-Newman on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

The Pioneer men battled hard, but saw its three-game winning streak come to a close on Saturday evening, 83-76.

Tusculum (10-11, 8-7 SoCon) will also travel to Carson-Newman on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. start.
