The Leland Police Department is investigating a Winnabow woman's death after her car went off the road along a stretch of U.S. 17 on Tuesday.

Just before 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, officers with the Leland Police Department and other emergency crews responded to an area of U.S. 17 South near Collins Way, following reports of a car leaving the roadway and coming to a stop in a nearby field, according to a news release from the town of Leland.

A person passing by saw the car in the field and called 911 after finding 78-year-old Geraldine Harris of Winnabow unresponsive behind the wheel, according to the release. Leland Fire/Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and began lifesaving efforts, but Harris did not survive.

An initial investigation found Harris experienced a medical emergency while driving, which causedher to leave the roadway. Evidence at the scene suggests she died from the medicalemergency, not the crash, the release stated.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident, and no one else was hurt.
