Winnebago County Board: Five incumbents, two newcomers, one familiar face elected

Democrats snagged four of eight seats up for grabs on the Winnebago County Board Tuesday. However, the Republicans still maintain a board majority occupying 12 of the board's 20 seats.

In District 2, incumbent Republican Jim Webster collected 64.48% of the vote and defeated political newcomer and Democrat Lindsey Lancaster. District 2 includes communities in the northwestern reaches of the county such as Rockton, South Beloit and Shirland. Both Webster and Lancaster live in Rockton.

In District 5, incumbent Democrat Dave Tassoni edged Republican Teena Newburg by collecting 51.71% of the vote. District 5 is located in northwest Rockford, bounded roughly by West State Street to the south, Latham Road to the north, Meridian Road to the west and the Rock River to the east.

In District 6, incumbent Republican Keith McDonald collected 55.50% of the voted and defeated Democrat Richard Kennedy. McDonald is a plant manager. Kennedy is a retired Rockford police officer.

In District 10, incumbent Democrat Joe Hoffman collected 58.30% of the vote and defeated Republican challenger David Peyton. The southeast side district is roughly bordered by North Alpine Road to the east, Ninth Street to the west, East State Street to the north and Harrison Avenue to the south.

In District 15, political newcomer Christopher Scrol, a Democrat, collected 50.85% of the vote and narrowly defeated incumbent Republican Burt Gerl. Gerl is a home remodeler, Scrol is a Rockford firefighter. The district is a large area in southeast Rockford bounded by Newburg Road to the north, Sandy Hollow Road to the south, South Alpine Road to the east and Colorado Avenue and Carol Place to the west.

Michael Thompson, 28, a Republican, defeated Bryan Amezquita, a Democrat, by collecting 57.66% of the vote. Thompson is an educator and Amezquita is a small business entrepreneur. District 17, which borders the east side of the Rock River, includes parts of Rockford, Loves Park and Machesney Park.

In District 19, Democrat incumbent Angela Fellars collected 53.63% of the vote and defeated Republican Doug Mark, a former Rockford City Council member. District 19 is a large, jagged area straddling the Rock River and extending from East State Street to the south up to West Riverside Boulevard to the north.

In District 20, Republican County Board member John Sweeney collected 57.79% of the vote and defeated political newcomer and Democrat Kathleen Dingle. Sweeney previously served on the board from 2006 to 2016 in District 16. District 20 straddles East Riverside Boulevard between North Alpine and North Perryville roads representing residents in Rockford and Loves Park.
