Winner/Colome rallies to earn win in Class B state Legion opener

Jul. 29—GREGORY, S.D. — Winner/Colome stormed back from a 6-3 deficit in the final three innings of play to win the opening game at the South Dakota Class B American Legion state baseball tournament Friday over Hartford/Humboldt by a score of 8-7.

Aiden Barfuss helped drive the Royals to victory, picking up four hits and driving in four runs, including with a fifth-inning home run that brought Winner/Colome to within a run at 6-5. In the sixth inning, Winner/Colome pieced together three straight RBI singles from Joey Cole, Pierce Nelson and Barfuss to put Winner/Colome ahead 8-6 and held the lead from there.

Cole had three runs scored and two hits. Barfuss was the winning pitcher in relief of Ethan Bartels. Bartels allowed 11 hits and six runs and struck out three, while Barfuss threw the final three innings, allowing a hit and one unearned run, with seven strikeouts.

Braden Herr had three hits and drove in four runs for H/H, which picked up three hits and three runs scored from Loren Jacobsen. Seth Gabbert was the losing pitcher for H/H, throwing 4 1/3 innings with five runs and six hits allowed, along with six strikeouts.

Winner/Colome (14-6) will take on either Dell Rapids or Vermillion at 5 p.m. on Saturday in a winner's bracket game, while H/H (13-12) will play in the leadoff elimination game at 10 a.m. Saturday.

GREGORY, S.D. — A nine-run third inning helped Redfield pick up a win in the opening round of the South Dakota Class B American Legion state baseball tournament on Friday.

Erik Salmen had four RBIs for Redfield, along with two each from Camden Osborn and Owen Osborn, who each scored four times. Elijah Morrissette added two hits in the game as well, allowing Keaton Rohlfs to setting in on the mound for Redfield. Rohlfs, who had just 44 pitches in 3 1/3 innings, allowed three hits, one run and struck out two. Nolan Gall had five outs in relief without allowing a hit or run.

Milbank saw the game turn sour on seven errors on defense and had four pitchers throw in the game. Mike Karges had the lone RBI and Kaden Krause, Isaac Schulte and Karges had the lone hit.

Redfield (21-6) is back in action on Saturday in Gregory in the winner's bracket against either Platte/Geddes or Gregory County at 7:30 p.m. Milbank (18-8) will take on the loser of that Platte/Geddes and Gregory County game on Saturday afternoon in an elimination contest.
