Winner/Colome's Katie Welker places third at USA High School Clay Target League National Championship
Jul. 12—MASON, Mich. — Katie Welker of Winner/Colome placed third in the female individual bracket of the USA High School Clay Target League National Championship on Sunday, July 10.
The three-day tournament consisted of 230 teams competing in a qualifying round on Friday, July 8 and 1,800 high school athletes competing in another qualifying round on Saturday, July 9.
Welker nearly had a perfect score as she recorded a 99 on day one and followed that up with a 97 on day two to finish with a total of 196. She tied with Michaela Baalmann from Kansas for second-place and was one point shy of tying first-place Lillian West from Ohio.
Welker, the regular season average leader in trap shooting in the South Dakota High School Clay Target League this year, also plans to shoot in college for the Concordia (Neb.) University, which is a private Lutheran school.
