Winners announced for Boys & Girls Club Black History Month Art contest

HENDERSONVILLE - City of Hendersonville Mayor Barbara Volk joined USCellular to announce the three winners of its first annual Black History Month Art Contest with Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County at a celebration held March 8 at the Club located at 1304 Ashe Street.

Public voting for the finalists’ art was available online. The winning artists were awarded gift cards in the following amounts:

  • Lia H., 12, received $250 for first place

  • Arabella W., 7, received $150 for second place

  • Jose G., 11, received $100 for third place

In recognition of influential Black STEM icons, Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County members were encouraged to create original pieces of artwork of important historical figures, world leaders, scientists and educators who have made vital contributions to the world of STEM.

Ten finalists were chosen by representatives from the Boys & Girls Club based on creativity, quality, interpretation, clarity of theme and overall impression. Public voting for the finalists was made available online throughout the month of February. In addition, the finalists’ artwork was digitally displayed in USCellular’s Hendersonville location at 1900 Four Seasons Boulevard.

“Working with Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County to celebrate Black History Month and to highlight the achievements of Black STEM icons such as Mae Jemison, Ruth Bridges and Dr. Dorothy Brown has been extremely gratifying,” said Matt Lawrence, Hendersonville store manager for USCellular, in a news release. “The creativity that Club members displayed in their artwork was inspiring and we congratulate our participants and winners in this year’s contest.”

Since 2009, the company has donated more than $22.6 million along with countless experiences and technology items to nonprofit organizations across the country. Additionally, through its After School Access Project, USCellular has pledged up to $13 million in hotspots and service to help up to 50,000 youth connect to reliable internet in its markets.
