Winona High School students’ paintings donated to UT Health Tyler pediatrics unit
TYLER, Texas (KETK) – Students from Winona High School donated three paintings to be displayed at UT Health Tyler’s pediatrics unit to impact and serve patients.

According to a release, Jeffery Stokes, a theater teacher at Winona High School, led the project with their students to create pieces of art. Stokes reportedly split his students into 3 groups, each group having pieces of wood and canvas, with the goal being assembling canvases and painting animated images on the two foot by four foot canvases.
“The construction work was exciting and hands-on, but then they stretched the canvas and we got to the part where they had to grid out and start replicating the image in each square,” Stokes said. “Slowly the images started coming together so they were like ‘Oh my gosh. We did this!”

After completing the projects, Stoke said he wanted a way for their students hard work to impact and serve the community. He pitched the idea of donating the art pieces to the hospital and his class agreed.

“The kids get to know what it feels like to give back to the community, to know they’ll continually bring joy to these kids who are going through a tough time,” Stokes said.
Karyn Gordon, one of Stoke’s students, said that when she had to go to the pediatrician’s office as kid, the art on the walls was a comfort to her and she is glad to be a part of that comfort for someone else.
“When I go to the doctor, to this day I enjoy seeing the paintings in the office, so when I found out we were giving our paintings to the hospital, I was like, ‘This is so cool.’ I feel so honored,” said Gordon.
Robin Davis, the clinical manager of pediatrics at UT Health Tyler said that she was glad to display the art made by the students.
“Having such fun, colorful paintings on the walls really helps brighten the atmosphere and can help our patients feel more at ease during what can be a scary time for them,”
