Winona State knocks USF from ranks of unbeaten

The last undefeated team in NSIC football has fallen, as Winona State scored the final 13 points of the game to overcome a 10-point deficit and knock off USF 20-17 Saturday in Winona.

The Cougars, ranked 11th in Division II, drop to 7-1, while the Warriors move even further into the thickness that is the NISC race at 6-2.

Trailing 17-7 in the third, Winona got a field goal before the fourth quarter, then tied the game early in the final stanza on a 34-yard pass from Trevor Paulsen to Joe Sikma. Five minutes later they got a 42-yard field goal from Jacob Scott and that proved to be the difference, as the Cougars were unequipped to come back against the Warrior defense after NSIC rushing leader Thuro Reisdorfer went down with an injury. He had 35 yards on five carries before leaving, but without him, USF finished with just 68 net rushing yards.

Adam Mullen went 14-of-28 for 226 yards, firing touchdown strikes to Ethan Wittenburg and Mark Leonard, but he was also intercepted twice. Amaurii Grosskopf had nine tackles to lead the USF defense.

It doesn’t get any easier for USF, as they’ll host MSU-Mankato on Saturday. The Mavericks routed Augustana on Saturday in Sioux Falls to improve to 6-2 on the year.
