Don't let the "winter blues" get you down. When the weather gets colder it makes leaving the warmth of your cozy house feel like a chore; yet staying in the house will end up making you stir-crazy. Thus begins the cycle that leaves many needing a reason to brave the cold and enjoy a day out of the house.

The SouthCoast has a variety of things to curb that seasonal restlessness. Whether you are looking for some alone time, family time, or a night out with friends, here are some fun and unique ways to relieve your cabin fever. From cooking, and crafting, to rock climbing and axe throwing, there is something for everyone.

Feb 4: 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, $65, at the New Bedford Arts and Cultural Emporium, 127 W. Rodney French Blvd., New Bedford. Learn the basics of application of scrimshaw on bone. You will have a choice of either a letter opener or a rectangle of bone, all supplies included in the price. Soup, Chowder & Chili Cook-off

Feb. 5: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, $10, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 351 Elm St., Dartmouth. You will get one bowl and there will be 12 stations set up where you can sample as many soups as you would like. To get tickets, send an email to stpetersdartmouth@gmail.com.

Grateful Dead: The Vintage Posters, 1966-1995 Opening Reception

Feb. 5: 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, free, at the Narrow Center For the Arts, 16 Anawan St., Fall River. Celebrate the Grateful Dead and enjoy an evening of art, music, and beer inspired by the legendary band. There will be samples of the Narrows Center & Troy City Brewery collaboration of “Skeleton & Roses” West Coast IPA and some Fall River favorite food offerings. Grateful Dead poster curator Ted Bahr will be on hand for the reception to conduct a slide presentation and discussion about the incredible artwork. Followed by a performance by musician, author, music journalist, and radio host David Gans.

Santo Cristo Parish Winter Craft Fair

Feb 11 and 12: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Santo Christo Church Hall, 240 Columbia St., Fall River. There will be jewelry, home decor, soaps, candles, food/bake sale, and more.

Family Storytime

Feb. 15: noon, Wednesday, free, at Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum, 396 County St., New Bedford. Meet in the mansion for an engaging half-hour of stories for the whole family. After the stories, take home a family fun craft kit to collaborate and create together.

Pies, Pies, Pies! 18th-Century Hearth Cooking

Feb. 19: 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, free, at the Lafayette-Durfee House, 94 Cherry St., Fall River. Able to be made days ahead of a celebration and a great way to preserve foods, pies are an integral part of 18th-century New England harvest culture. Join them as they bake several sweet and savory pies, fruit tarts, and puff pastes, with Foodways Historian Stacy Booth, and discuss the importance and delicious 18th-century history of pies. Fall River Symphony Orchestra's 98th Season: Winter - Winter Dreams

Black Entrepreneurship Then and Now

Feb. 25: 2 to 3:15 p.m., Saturday, at the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, Corson Maritime Theater, 33 William St., New Bedford. They will highlight 21st-century Black entrepreneurship in New Bedford. Black entrepreneurship in the Americas can be traced to the 1600s when Africans in America seized every opportunity to develop enterprises and participate as businesspeople in the commercial life of the British Colonies. A small group of entrepreneurs right here in New Bedford included Paul Cuffe, Mary “Polly” Johnson, and Lewis Temple.

Sustainable Seafood Cooking Class/Demo with Chef Michael Melo

Chef Michael Melo (M&C Catering) presents a combination cooking class and demo so you can see all the behind-the-scenes of working with local seafood while trying it yourself.
