Winter Carnival carries on at MTU despite warmer weather

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WJMN) – Snow sculptures and near 50 degree temperatures aren’t the best of friends, but the lack of typical winter weather in Houghton would not deter the students of Michigan Technological University from continuing a tradition that’s been around for more than a century.

The theme of this year’s Winter Carnival is “From Forests to Shores We Love the Outdoors.” There is a new winner for the first time since 2018. Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) took first place in the overall monthlong snow statue competition. Their entry, “The Lighthouse Shines The Way As the Ranger Heads to Bay” features the Ranger III vessel which takes guests to and from Isle Royale National Park, as well as the Keweenaw Waterway’s lower entry light.

Winter Carnival runs through Saturday. See more of the winners and get details on events, here.
