Winter Carnival in Houghton to carry on, cope with lack of snow

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WJMN) — Organizers for this year’s Winter Carnival say despite a lack of snow, they aren’t letting the warm temperatures make any Michigan Tech students sweat about their odds of taking part in the local tradition.

“Month-long statues are still taking shape – and groups are registered to make the smaller, faster all-nighter statues,” said a spokesperson in a Thursday release.

Groups are set to create yooper-themed statues guided by the phrase “from forests to shores we love the outdoors.” To make it work, organizers think they can gather enough snow from around the city for the statue builders to use.

“Winter Carnival is one way for the MTU and Keweenaw Communities to show how we can have an amazing time in our brutal winters but even in years where it may not be as harsh, everyone can still enjoy what Michigan Tech Students embody: tenacity,” said Joe Dlugos, Blue Key Honor Society President.

Events put on through the week include a skit comedy show Stage Revue next Thursday night, MTU hockey games Friday and Saturday nights, as well as a Torchlight Parade and fireworks display also set for Saturday.
