STAUNTON — This winter season a new indoor winter farmers’ market is sprouting in the Newtown neighborhood of Staunton that will offer everything from greens to meats to breads to sweets, according to a press release. Stauntonians will gain year-round access to locally grown veggies, meats, eggs, cheeses, mushrooms and more.

This event allows cooks, eaters and health fanatics alike to gather groceries, catch up with neighbors and support local producers all in one warm, bright location.

Participants will include familiar and new faces including Poplar Ridge Produce, Anathallo Acres, Calixto Farms, Rachel Jane’s Jam, Santiago Chocolates, Thorny Bottom Bees, Jones Garden, Little Hat Bakery, Susanna's Confections, Quince + Burdock, Ballerino Creamery, Dickie Brother's Fruit, Wild Altar Farm and more.

The impetus to start this indoor market came after years of vendors trying to find a solution to selling products after the end of the regular Staunton outdoor farmers market season, the release said. Many producers had products to sell, but nowhere easy to sell them.

This year, instead of standing in a parking lot in bone-chilling temperatures, several producers banded together and took the leap, the release said. Emmanuel Episcopal Church was willing to help by offering their space, which is wheelchair accessible.

“It’s been a long time coming but we are really excited to provide Staunton with a convenient way to get hyper-local foods throughout the wintertime,” said vendor Alex Moore, mushroom and meat producer whose products will be available at the Winter Market.

The Market will last until the Saturday before the normal outdoor market resumes in April and will be a great way to spend a cold Saturday morning. As Coleen Jones of Poplar Ridge Produce puts it: “Come to the Market and find the only greens you might see all winter!”

Winter Market when & where

The Winter Market starts Saturday, Jan. 14, and runs weekly from 9 a.m. to noon until the last Saturday in March 2023 in the Fellowship Hall at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on the corner of Frederick and Washington streets in Staunton.
