Yost, Mullins go 1-2 in Class B at Sebring event

On Wednesday, December 14, the Bob Paschen Open was held in Sebring. The following Polk County players competed.

In Class A, Johnny Wilhelmsen of Davenport finished in fifth place with a 3-3 record and a 48.75% ringer percentage.

In Class B, Robert Yost and Carl Mullins, both of the Winter Haven Horseshoe Club, finished first and second respectively with 4-0 and 3-1 records and 39.5% and 28.50% ringer percentages.

In Class C, Warren Gionet and Ralph Hawthorne, both of the Winter Haven Horseshoe Club, finished second and third respectively with identical 3-3 records and ringer percentages of 35.42% and 27.08%.

In Class D, Ken Keding of the Winter Haven Horseshoe Club finished first with a perfect 4-0 record and a ringer percentage of 34%.

Winter Haven Dan Mann State Farm Open

The annual Winter Haven Dan Mann State Farm Open horseshoe tournament was held Dec. 9, at Rotary Park in Winter Haven. The following Polk County residents competed:

In Class A, John Wilder of the Winter Haven Horseshoe Club finished 3-3 with a 55.9% ringer percentage in a 4-man class double round robin.

In Class B, Larry Folkenroth also fo the Winter Haven Horseshoe Club finished fourth with a 1.5-4.5 record and a 35.83% ringer percentage.

In Class C, Warren Gionet and Carl Mullins both from the Winter Haven Horseshoe Club finished respectively first and fourth with 5-1 and 1-5 records and ringer percentages of 34.4% and 20%.

In Class D, three members of the Winter Haven Horseshoe Club competed finishing as follow: Ken Keding in first place with a 26.5% ringer percentage; Jeffrey Murphy in 4th place with a 1-3 record and 18% ringer percentage; and Robert Savering in fifth place with a 0-4 record and a 7% ringer percentage.

Winter Haven County Auto Auction Veterans Day Open

The Winter Haven County Auto Auction Veterans Day Open was held Nov. 11, at Rotary Park. Two of the three classes were run in the morning; Class A did not pitch in the afternoon due to inclement weather.

In Class B, Marcelo Santoyo of Orlando won with a 5-1 record and a 40% ringer percentage. In second place, with an identical 5-1 record, but losing on ringer percentage and head-to-head competition was Jon Harris of Polk County with a 26.67% ringer percentage. Places 3 through 7 were swept by members of the Winter Haven Club. Ralph Hawthorne finished third with a 4-2 record and a 30% ringer percentage. John Wardner finished fourth with a 3.5-2.5 record and a 28.75% ringer percentage. Scott Phillips finished fifth with a 2.5-3.5 record and a 25% ringer percentage. Carl Mullins withdrew after his fifth game but still managed to secure sixth place with a 1-3 record and a 20% ringer percentage. Warren Gionet, playing in his first tournament, finished in seventh with a 0-6 record and a 27.08% ringer percentage.

In Class C, Bill Sproessig of Sebring finished in first place with a 4-1 record and a 10.5% ringer percentage. Jeffrey Murphy and Ken Keding of the Winter Haven Club finished second and third respectively with identical 3-2 records and 14% and 22% ringer percentages respectively. Charlie Pierson and Sam Caincross of the Polo Park Club in Davenport finished in fourth and fifth place respectively with idnetical 2.5-2.5 records and 20% and 14% ringer percentages respectively. Robert Savering, playing in his first tournament, finished in sixth place.
