This winter was one of Detroit's top 10 warmest on record

Thick coats, heavy snow boots and knit hats weren’t the typical apparel for a Michigan winter this year. Rather, hoodies, sweatpants, and sneakers were much more common.

Metro Detroit’s 2022-23 winter season took its place as a top 10 warmest winter record holder, ranking 7th.

According to the National Weather Service in White Lake, the high temperature reached 33.4 degrees Fahrenheit, placing this winter among its warmer years.

The report shows the top 20 coldest and warmest years in the Detroit area, Flint Bishop, and the Saginaw area. Detroit temperatures were first recorded in 1874, while temperature records for the other two areas weren’t noted until decades later.

Currently, the winter of 1881-1882 holds the warmest temperature in metro Detroit, with 36.9 degrees Fahrenheit. The coldest winter was recorded at 18.8 degrees in 1903-1904.
