Winter parking regulations are in effect in Milwaukee. Here's what you need to know.

With winter comes winter parking regulations.

Here's what to know, from how long they're in effect to rules when snow emergencies are declared.

And an important rule of thumb: Posted signs always take precedence.

The following information was found on the city's parking regulations webpage. Check that out for more details.

When are Milwaukee's winter parking regulations in effect?

Dec. 1 to March 1.

Overnight parking will be talked about a lot, so here's what it means:

Regardless of the season, overnight parking is considered to be between 2 and 6 a.m. In order to park on city streets during that time period, a vehicle needs either an overnight parking permit or temporary overnight parking permission.

People can purchase or renew overnight parking permits here and can request temporary overnight parking permission here. Temporary overnight parking permission will not be granted more than three nights in a 30-day period, the website said.

The only times an overnight parking permit or overnight parking permission is not required between 2 and 6 a.m. is:

  • On Sunday mornings

  • The morning of these holidays and the morning of the day following: New Year's Day, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

  • For up to 90 minutes in the same block of a business licensed by the city that's open between 2 and 6 a.m.

No overnight parking on through highways and bus routes

During the winter period, no overnight parking is allowed on through highways and bus routes.

While these streets are not individually posted, a list of them can be found here.

Certain residential streets have specific side of the street parking during winter months

"Certain residential streets are restricted to parking on a specific side of the street during the winter months," the website said.

These streets have signs that say "No Parking" on one side of the street either for the entire winter period, or with a monthly alternation of the prohibited side.

Most residential streets limit overnight parking to one side of the street, which alternates

"Most residential streets limit parking between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. to one side of the street on an alternating basis throughout the year," the website said.

From Dec. 1 to March 1: On even-numbered calendar days (before midnight), vehicles must be parked on the side of the street with even-numbered addresses. On odd-numbered days (before midnight), vehicles must be parked on the side of the street with odd-numbered addresses.

Rules for when a snow emergency is declared

If a snow emergency is declared by the Commissioner of Public Works, these parking regulations go into effect:

  • No parking is allowed on through highways and mass transit (bus) routes from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. A list of these streets can be found here. Vehicles must be moved to a side street and parked in accordance with all other regulations on the proper side of the street.

  • Alternate side parking is required from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. unless otherwise posted and must continue until the snow emergency has ended.

  • "Temporary No Parking" signs may be posted by the city to assist in cleanup after major snowfalls.

During a declared snow emergency and cleanup period, Milwaukee Public Schools makes some of its locations available for parking from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. That list can be found here.

Vehicles not parked in compliance with winter parking regulations will be cited and could end up getting towed, the website said.

Daytime parking

Despite the season, if a street has no posted time restrictions, vehicles can park on that street all day. If hourly parking exists, parking is limited to the posted time restrictions. Remember to pay parking meters if payments are required at the time.
