Winter returns to Utah after brief spring-like weather

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Tuesday Utah! What a difference 24 hours makes! Following gusty winds and widespread wet weather, a frigid, wintery day is ahead.

The bottom line? After mild temperatures ahead of our storm, a strong cold front will tumble temperatures and leave behind mountain and valley snow.

A strong cold front changed the Utah weather scene and now, temperatures have drastically dropped with accumulated snow in some spots. Some icy spots could be lingering, and the mountains will continue to see snow, while a few snow showers can’t be ruled out in some valleys. Given the timing of the moisture, the worst commute was this morning, but expect to see some minor road impacts through this afternoon.

Due to the fact the mountains will continue to see snow, winter alerts remain in effect for a good chunk of the Beehive State.  We have Winter Storm warnings for the northern and central mountains. These warnings continue through 5 p.m., so expect for the southern Wasatch as that will continue through 11 p.m. The Winter Weather Advisories that are posted are for the Tooele/Rush Valleys, the Wasatch Front, Cache Valley, Bear Lake, the Bear River Valley, the Wasatch Back, the southern mountains, eastern Box Elder County, Eastern Juab/Millard Counties, the Sanpete Valley, and Southwest Utah.

These advisories will continue through 5 p.m. this evening. Winds will also be whipping as the system moves through.  Wind gusts up to 65 mph are possible along the higher peaks!

As the storm exits Tuesday, temperatures will be frigid cold with northwest flow remaining. While we will struggle to get out of the 30s today, we see a warming trend through the end of the work week.  Dry weather will also settle in with a quick jump in temperatures back to the 40s and then eventually 50s. By Friday we’ll likely be back in the upper 50s along the Wasatch Front and upper 60s in St. George.

The warmth will likely be short-lived though as another strong cold front looks likely to arrive this weekend. Stay tuned because this storm also brings precipitation potential.
