Staunton falls to Spotswood in regional final

Staunton fell in the Region 3C boys basketball championship game Saturday night. The Storm lost to Spotswood 64-58. Staunton had won seven in a row before Saturday, but it still advances to the state tournament.

The Storm will hit the road to play Cave Spring Friday. Cave Spring, the defending state champions, handed the region's top seed Northside its first loss of the season Saturday in the Region 3D championship, winning 65-60. Northside will play Spotswood.

Buffalo Gap girls headed to state basketball tournament

SWOOPE — Buffalo Gap will return to the girls state basketball tournament after a win Thursday night. The Bison overwhelmed William Campbell 41-17 in the Region 1B semifinals. Not only does that advance Gap to the regional championship Saturday, but earns them a spot in the state quarterfinals.

Chloe Emurian led the Bison with 12 points, while Avery Bradley finished with 11 in the win. Gap's Hannah Coffman added 10. Bailey Talley finished with six and Kayleigh Hemp had two for the Bison.

On Saturday, Gap will host Rappahannock County, an upset winner over top seed Cumberland. The Panthers won 53-29 in the semifinals Thursday.

Staunton boys advance in regional basketball; Grace Christian girls win in state quarterfinals

Staunton moved on in the Region 3C boys basketball tournament following a 70-55 win over Heritage Tuesday night. The second-seeded Storm have won 13 of their last 14 games, including six in a row, as they advance to the regional semifinals. Staunton will hosts No. 6 Charlottesville Thursday at 7 p.m. Charlottesville edged No. 3 Fluvanna 59-58 Tuesday.

The only other boys basketball team remaining this postseason is in Region 1B, where No. 4 Buffalo Gap travels to top-seed Franklin for a 6 p.m. regional semifinal clash Wednesday night.

Also Tuesday, the Wilson Memorial boys lost to Rustburg 65-51, Fort Defiance fell to Spotswood 60-40 and Madison beat Stuarts Draft 67-49.

In girls basketball, Wilson Memorial's season ended with a 66-21 loss to Spotswood in the Region 3C quarterfinals. Stuarts Draft lost in the Region 2B quarterfinals, falling to Clarke County 50-16.

Buffalo Gap is the lone Shenandoah District girls team left standing. The No. 2 Bison will host No. 3 William Campbell Thursday night in the regional semifinals.

In private school basketball, Grace Christian beat Westover 47-35 in the the girls VACA state quarterfinals. Lucy Wells led Grace with 20 points and nine rebounds.

In D3 men's basketball, Mary Baldwin's season came to a close with a 77-63 loss to Southern Virginia in the USA South Conference Tournament. In just its second season as a varsity sport, MBU posted a 14-12 record.

Mary Baldwin opens postseason; High school regional play continue Tuesday

STAUNTON — Mary Baldwin University's men's basketball team will host a first-round game in the USA South Conference Tournament Tuesday night. It's just the second varsity season for the Fighting Squirrels.

No. 3-seed Mary Baldwin will play No. 6 Southern Virginia at the PAC on the Staunton school's campus at 6 p.m. The Fighting Squirrels finished their regular season with a 14-11 record, the best in the school's brief basketball school history.

"Let’s pack the PAC tonight! 6:00pm.," Mary Baldwin coach Matt Griggs tweeted Tuesday afternoon.

Four players are scoring in double digits for Mary Baldwin this season, led by Brandon Stoudamire's 14 points a game. Brett Ashbury is scoring at 13.8 points per game, while Quentin Hart is at 12.9 and Jaden Ignacio scores 12.2 per contest.

High school regional play continued in the area Monday. No. 4 Buffalo Gap beat No. 5 William Campbell 75-54 in the Region 1B boys basketball tournament. Bennett Bowers led the Bison with 21 points, while Micah Canterbury scored 15 and Jackson Laporte added 13 in the win. Gap plays at top seed Franklin Wednesday night.

Sixth-seeded Riverheads lost to Carver 76-64 in the Region 1B tournament, ending the Gladiators season.

Tuesday night, Fort Defiance will travel to Spotswood in the Region 3C boys tournament at 7:30 p.m.. Fort beat Liberty Christian Friday in a play-in game. Also Tuesday, No. 2 seed Staunton hosts No. 7 Heritage and No. 4 Wilson Memorial hosts No. 5 Rustburg. Both of those games start at 7 p.m. In Region 2B, Stuarts Draft travels to Madison County.

In girls basketball, No. 7 Wilson Memorial travels to No. 2 Spotswood at 6 p.m. in the Region 3C tournament.

Waynesboro's Bautista wins swimming state title; Riverheads, Buffalo Gap, Grace Christian wrestlers win state titles

Waynesboro's Adam Bautista won the VHSL Class 3 swimming state championship in the 100 breaststroke Friday. Waynesboro finished seventh as a team in the boys meet. Bautista finished with a time of 59.35, edging York's Elijah Fields by just over a second.

“It feels good to see everyone’s hard work pay off at this meet," Bautista said. "I’m sad swim is over, but we’ll always have the friendship and support of our teammates."

In the VHSL Class 1 wrestling state championships Saturday, Buffalo Gap's Jacob Carter won the title at 285 pounds. Riverheads, which finished as state runner-up as a team, had three state champions: Jake Yowell (126), Cody Cash (165) and Luke Bryant (190). Riverheads' Ethan Eppard (144) and Jax Alllebaugh (150) finished the day as state runners-up.

Grace Christian was seventh in the VISSAA state tournament, with Daniel Cozzolino winning the championship at 126 pounds, earning his 100th career victory in the quarterfinal round. At 165, Corban Schmandt was second.

Staunton won the JV boys basketball Shenandoah District championship with a 58-44 win over Fort Defiance. Staunton finished the year with a 22-0 record. In the girls JV district championship, Wilson Memorial took home the title with a 45-21 win over Staunton.

Fort and Wilson girls, Staunton boys win Shenandoah District basketball championships; Region 3C track results

Fort Defiance and Wilson Memorial both picked up wins in girls basketball Monday, finishing as co-champions of the Shenandoah District with district records of 10-2.

Fort beat Stuarts Draft 68-34 behind 30 points from Taliyah Hostetter. The senior had nine 3-pointers in the win. Meanwhile Wilson Memorial's lone senior, Laci Norman, scored 25 points and CC Robinson added 11 points and 10 rebounds in a 59-45 win over Waynesboro.

In the only other girls game, Staunton beat Riverheads 41-35.

In boys basketball Monday, Staunton claimed the Shenandoah District championship with a 69-50 win over Riverheads. The Storm won 12 of their last 13 games to finish the regular season 18-4 and 11-1 in the district.

Fort Defiance beat Stuarts Draft in boys hoops 55-34 and Wilson Memorial topped Waynesboro 66-44. Finn Irving had 26 points and 12 rebounds for the Hornets, while Lucas Schatz added 14 points and 14 rebounds in the win.

Over the weekend in the Region 3C indoor track and field meet, Fort Defiance brought home regional championships in the girls 4x800 relay (Abby Lane, Logan Braun, Trinity Neff, Kaity Ruiz) and girls 4x400 relay (Taylor Cubbage, Lane, Ruiz, Neff). Taylor Cubbage also won the 500 dash regional title for Fort.

Waynesboro's Adam Groves won the boys 1,000-meter run. He also teamed with Dylan Colander, Grayson Norris and Gage Groves to win the 4x800 regional championship. Staunton's Maaliah Cabell won the boys high jump title.

Blalock, Hostetter, Alexander all lead Fort girls to win; Gap girls win 11th in a row

Fort Defiance got a balanced scoring effort Friday night in a 53-20 win over Staunton in girls basketball. Baylee Blalock, Taliyah Hostetter and Mia Alexander all scored 11 points in the win, Fort's 10th victory in its last 11 games. All eight players who took the floor for Fort scored in the win. Sam Swift led Staunton with eight points.

In other girls basketball Friday, Buffalo Gap finished its regular season with a 41-27 win over Stuarts Draft. It was the 11th win in a row for the Bison, who are 15-6 heading into the postseason. And Waynesboro beat Riverheads 68-60.

In boys basketball, Buffalo Gap beat Stuarts Draft 53-49, Staunton topped Fort Defiance 53-36 and Riverheads got past Waynesboro 59-52.

In wrestling, Fishburne won the Virginia Independent Conference championship Friday, with five individual championships and three more second-place finishes.

Finn Irving leads Wilson boys to win, Hornets' Robinson scores 21 for girls

Wilson Memorial got 23 points combined from the Irving brothers in a Thursday night win over Turner Ashby. Finn Irving scored 13 points, and added 10 rebounds, while Eli Irving finished with 10 points in a 65-47 win on senior night. The Hornets have now won eight of their last 10 games and improved to 15-6 this season.

The Wilson Memorial girls also got a win, beating Harrisonburg 50-44. It was another double-double for CC Robinson, who had a monster game with 21 points and 17 rebounds. Laci Norman added 15 points in the win.

Gap girls keep rolling; Schatz has double-double in Wilson boys win

Buffalo Gap won its 10th game in a row in girls basketball Tuesday with a 63-43 victory over Staunton. The Bison haven't lost in over a month as they prepare for the postseason. Avery Bradley had 22 points to lead the Bison while Chloe Emurian added 16.

In other girls basketball, Wilson Memorial edged Riverheads 42-37. CC Robinson had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Hornets, while Wilson's Laci Norman scored 19 in the win.

Mia Alexander led Fort Defiance with 23 points in a 77-64 win over Waynesboro. Trinity Hedrick added 20, while Taliyah Hostetter finished with 12 points and Carleyanne Ryder scored 10 for Fort.

The Wilson Memorial boys beat Riverheads 70-60. Lucas Schatz had a double-double in the win with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Finn Irving finished with 17 points while Eli Irving scored 14 and Aiden Podgorski added 10 points in the victory.

Fort Defiance beat Waynesboro 38-25 and Staunton got past Buffalo Gap 55-49 in other boys basketball Tuesday night.

Wilson Memorial's Irving achieves scoring milestone

Finn Irving scored 15 to break the 1,000-point mark for his career. He also helped lead Wilson Memorial to a 56-35 win over Fort Defiance Friday as the Hornets improved to 13-6 overall and 8-2 in the Shenandoah District. Lucas Schatz added 14 points in Wilson's win.

Also in boys basketball, Buffalo Gap beat Waynesboro 61-36, Staunton topped Stuarts Draft 83-49 and Stuart Hall rallied to beat Covenant 40-38.

In girls basketball Friday, Mia Alexander led three players in double-figure scoring with 18 points to help Fort Defiance beat Wilson Memorial 65-58. Trinity Hedrick added 12 points while Calleigh Wilkerson finished with 10. Fort has won eight of its last nine. Laci Norman and CC Robinson both had 18 in the loss for Wilson.

Buffalo Gap's girls beat Waynesboro 81-38 and Stuarts Draft held off Staunton 34-29.

Coffman's 23 leads Buffalo Gap girls; Wilson Memorial's Irving scores 42 in Hornets win

Buffalo Gap's girls basketball won its eighth-straight game with a 65-45 win over Wilson Memorial Tuesday night. The Bison were led by Hannah Coffman's 23 points, as well as 15 from Chloe Emurian and 10 from Bailey Talley. CC Robinson had 14 for Wilson in the loss.

Fort Defiance beat Riverheads 88-61 behind a huge 27 points from Trinity Hedrick while Calleigh Wilkerson finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Anna Shirley led the Gladiators with 28 points.

Also in girls basketball, Waynesboro beat Stuarts Draft 38-26, while Staunton fell to Broadway 58-48.

Over on the boys side, Wilson Memorial beat Buffalo Gap 79-65. Finn Irving scored 42 points, leaving him three points shy of 1,000 for his career. He also had seven assists and six rebounds in the Hornets win.

Fort Defiance beat Riverheads 63-31, Staunton topped Broadway 61-55, and Waynesboro got past Stuarts Draft 56-42.

Also Tuesday night, C. J. DeWitt was inducted into the Waynesboro hall of fame. He is the winningest coach in Waynesboro football, basketball, and boys tennis history.

Greenmun, Harper lead Grace Christian girls

Grace Christian beat United Christian Academy 46-32 in girls basketball Monday. Aubrey Greenmun led the way with 14 points, while Maddie Harper added 13.The Warriors are now 12-4 on the season.

Over the weekend in boys basketball, Wilson Memorial lost to Spotswood 42-36 in the Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout in Lexington Saturday. Aiden Podgorski scored 13 points to lead the Hornets. In the same event, Staunton fell to Floyd County 66-59. Also Saturday, Stuart Hall beat Randolph Macon Academy 50-47.

Bowers, Canterbury lead Gap boys; CC Robinson with another double-double for Wilson girls

Bennett Bowers had 14 points, including hitting all six of his free throws in the final quarter, as Buffalo Gap held off Riverheads 51-45 in boys basketball Friday night. Micah Canterbury added 12 for the Bison in the win. Will Gardner led Riverheads with 16 points in the loss.

In other boys basketball Friday, Staunton beat Waynesboro 47-36, and Rockbridge topped Stuarts Draft 61-37 in the Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout in Lexington.

In girls basketball, Trinity Hedrick and Jayden Hostetter led 10 Fort players in the scoring column in a 64-55 win over Strasburg in the Rock the Ribbon Roundball Shootout. Hedrick finished with 13 points and Hostetter scored 12. Fort has now won six of its last seven games, with the one loss a one-pointer to Buffalo Gap.

CC Robinson continued her dominating season for Wilson Memorial with 20 points and 13 rebounds in a 51-32 win over Stuarts Draft. Asia Knight had 13 for the Hornets and Laci Norman added 10 in the win.

Also in girls hoops, Waynesboro beat Staunton 42-38 and Buffalo Gap got past Riverheads 55-43.

Irving leads Wilson Memorial in boys basketball; Wilkerson paces Fort girls in win

Finn Irving had 29 points and seven rebounds in Wilson Memorial's 69-59 win over Stuarts Draft Thursday in boys basketball. Lucas Schatz added 13 points for the Hornets, who are now 6-2 in the Shenandoah District and 11-5 overall.

Also in boys hoops, Fort Defiance beat Monticello 59-46.

In girls basketball, Fort beat Rockbridge County 52-13 behind 10 points from Calleigh Wilkerson. Riley Davis added nine points as 10 Fort Defiance players found the scoring column.

Gap girls win behind Emurian and Talley; Wilson girls win 7th straight

Chloe Emurian and Bailey Talley both had 17 points in Buffalo Gap's 65-64 win over Fort Defiance in girls basketball Tuesday night. Avery Bradley added 14 points for the Bison and Karah Richie hit the game-winner for the Bison. Fort Defiance got 19 from Trinity Hedrick in the loss.

Wilson Memorial beat Staunton 49-32 behind Kelsey Payne's 15 points. Wilson's CC Robinson added 13 points and 15 rebounds, while Laci Norman finished with 11 points in the win. The Hornets have won seven games in a row and 10 of their last 11.

Also in girls basketball Tuesday, Stuarts Draft beat Riverheads 41-24.

In boys basketball, Donovan Jenkins pulled down an offensive rebound and scored on the putback with four seconds remaining to lift Stuarts Draft to a 42-40 win over Riverheads.

Staunton beat Wilson Memorial 55-50 for the Storm's sixth win in a row, Staunton improved to 12-3 on the season. Also in boys hoops, Buffalo Gap edged Fort Defiance 32-29.

Double-double from Robinson leads Wilson past Waynesboro

Wilson Memorial topped Waynesboro 53-44 in girls basketball Friday night. CC Robinson had a huge double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Sabrina Reeves finished with 13 points for the Hornets.

In other girls basketball action, Fort Defiance's Trinity Hedrick had 15 points, one of nine Fort players in the scoring column, in a 55-22 win over Stuarts Draft. Taylor Chappell led the Cougars with 10 points. And Riverheads beat Staunton 43-29.

In boys basketball, Wilson Memorial had three players in double figures in its 64-51 win over Waynesboro Friday. Finn Irving led the way with 16 points, while Lucas Schatz and Eli Irving added 10 points each in the win.

Also, Fort Defiance edged Stuarts Draft 50-45 and Staunton beat Riverheads 73-44.

Bowers leads Bison past Grace Christian

Bennett Bowers had 22 points as Buffalo Gap beat Grace Christian 59-46 in boys basketball Thursday. Jackson Laporte and Micah Canterbury each finished with 11 points for the Bison.

In girls basketball Staunton beat Harrisonburg 34-28.

Hostetter, Hedrick lead Fort Defiance girls to Wednesday night win

Freshman Jayden Hostetter and junior Trinity Hedrick both scored 16 points in Fort Defiance's 78-57 win over Monticello Wednesday night in girls basketball. Mia Alexander added 13 points in the win, Fort's third in a row.

Buffalo Gap also picked up a win in girls hoops with a 55-41 victory over Broadway Wednesday.

In boys basketball, Wilson Memorial improved to 9-4 on the season with a 78-62 win over Turner Ashby. Grant Wright led the Hornets with 18 points while Chase Snyder finished with 15 in the win.

Bradley leads Gap girls with 20; Bowers' 33 paces Bison boys in win

Wilson Memorial beat Maggie Walker 43-37 in girls basketball Tuesday night. Wilson has won five games in a row and eight out of its last nine games to improve to 10-4 on the season. Laci Norman finished with 19 points to lead the Hornets, while Sabrina Reeves had 10. CC Robinson continued to dominate the boards with 14 rebounds.

Also in girls basketball action, Fort Defiance got 16 points from Trinity Hedrick to beat Staunton 65-36. Kourtlyn Stewart led Staunton with 18 points. Buffalo Gap beat Stuarts Draft 53-28 behind 20 points and six 3-pointers from Avery Bradley. Bailey Talley added 12 points in the win. And Waynesboro beat Riverheads 49-45.

In boys basketball, Bennett Bowers finished with 33 points as Buffalo Gap beat Stuarts Draft 60-51. Jackson Laporte added 16 for the Bison in the win.

Meanwhile, Carter Mooneyham had 10 points and Gabe Milo had 9 in Riverheads' 44-37 win over Waynesboro. Also Tuesday night, Staunton knocked off Fort Defiance 54-37.

Harper, Greenmun lead Grace Christian

Grace Christian bat Blue Ridge Christian 27-17 in girls basketball Saturday night. Maddie Harper led Grace with eight points while Aubrey Greenmun added seven in the win. The Warriors improved to 9-2 on the season.

Also in girls basketball, Luray stopped Stuarts Draft 51-21. Luray also beat Draft in boys basketball, 58-42.

Fort puts five players in double digits in girls basketball win

Trinity Hedrick led five Fort Defiance players in double figures Friday night as Fort beat Waynesboro 71-37. Hedrick finished with a game-high 17 points in the win. Mia Alexander scored 12 points, while Carleyanne Ryder, Maecy Ann Frizzell and Calleigh Wilkerson added 11 points each. Shyla Williams led Waynesboro with 13 points.

Wilson Memorial topped Riverheads 66-36 behind 26 points from Elise Bradley and 16 from Laci Norman. CC Robinson had 12 rebounds to go along with four points for the Hornets. Taia Chandler had 14 points for the Gladiators in the loss.

Also in girls basketball Friday Buffalo Gap won its third game in a row with a 57-31 win over Staunton.

In boys basketball, Staunton beat Buffalo Gap 53-40. Wilson got 19 points from Finn Irving and 14 from Grant Wright in a 67-55 win over Riverheads. Fort beat Waynesboro 59-46.

Gardner leads Riverheads boys basketball with five 3s in win

Riverheads got 15 points from William Gardner in a 69-42 win over Mountain View Thursday in boys basketball. All of Gardner's points came off of 3-point shots, part of 15 3s from the Gladiators. Riverheads has won three games in a row and improved to 5-5 on the season.

In other boys basketball action, Broadway beat Fort Defiance 50-35. In girls basketball, Fort lost to Broadway 70-58.

In wrestling, Wilson Memorial beat Alleghany 42-39 and William Monroe 59-18.

Talley, Coffman lead Bison in girls basketball; Bryant hits milestone for Riverheads wrestling

Bailey Talley had 13 points and Hannah Coffman added 12 in Buffalo Gap's 48-34 win over Mountain View Wednesday night in girls basketball. Mya Councill finished with 11 for Mountain View.

Rockbridge beat Riverheads in girls basketball 54-46. In boys basketball, Rockbridge beat Stuarts Draft 68-61.

Riverheads' Luke Bryant got his 100th career win in wrestling Wednesday as the Gladiators beat Parry McCluer 70-6, Franklin 72-12, and James River 60-21.

Four Wilson players score in double digits to lead Hornets over Fort in girls basketball

Wilson Memorial remained unbeaten in Shenandoah District girls basketball with a 66-57 win over Fort Defiance Tuesday night. CC Robinson finished with another double-double, scoring 21 points and pulling down 18 rebounds. The sophomore was one of four Hornets players to score in double figures. Sabrina Reeves finished with 11 points, while both Elise Bradley and Asia Knight had 10. Wilson is now 4-0 in district play and 8-4 overall.

Grace Christian girls basketball got 11 points and 11 rebounds from Aubrey Greenmun in a 49-32 win over Faith Christian Tuesday. The Warriors are now 8-1 on the season.

In other girls basketball action, Buffalo Gap beat Waynesboro 64-30. Chloe Emurian had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Bison, and Bailey Talley added 14 points in the win. Stuarts Draft also got a win over Staunton 35-27.

In boys basketball, Fort Defiance beat Wilson Memorial 47-40. Waynesboro beat Buffalo Gap 48-45 in double overtime. Staunton topped Stuarts Draft 77-42. Bennentt Dunlap had 12 points as Riverheads beat Liberty 58-50.

Robinson gets game-winner for Wilson girls; Dunlap buries last-second shot for Riverheads boys

Wilson Memorial sophomore CC Robinson scored with four seconds remaining in Friday night's game, giving the Hornets a thrilling 44-42 win over Buffalo Gap in Shenandoah District girls basketball action.

Robinson finished with 13 points and 16 rebounds in the win. Sabrina Reeves added 10 points and Laci Norman finished with nine in the victory. Wilson had to rally from a 14-point deficit after three quarters to get the win. The Hornets scored half their points — 22 — in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.

In other girls action, Fort Defiance beat Riverheads 71-47. Trinity Hedrick finished with 20 points to lead Fort. Mia Alexander added 13 in the win. Taia Chandler led Riverheads with 20 points. Meanwhile Waynesboro beat Stuarts Draft 41-28.

In boys basketball, sophomore Henley Dunlap hit a game-winner with a second left to help Riverheads pull out a 47-45 win over Fort Defiance.

Also, Wilson Memorial beat Buffalo Gap 54-49 and Stuarts Draft topped Waynesboro 55-44.

Staunton boys basketball tops Turner Ashby

In girls basketball Tuesday, Fort Defiance fell to Broadway 80-68. Trinity Hedrick led Fort with 22 points while Mia Alexander added 18 in the loss. East Rock topped Stuarts Draft 48-25.

In boys hoops, Staunton beat Turner Ashby 60-24. Fort's boys lost to Broadway 50-26 Tuesday night and East Rockingham beat Stuarts Draft 71-40.

Robinson's double-double leads Wilson Memorial girls basketball

CC Robinson and Kayleigh Coffey helped lead Wilson Memorial to a 46-14 win over Harrisonburg in girls basketball Monday night. Robinson finished the game with another double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds, while Coffey scored 10 points in the win.  Elise Bradley and Sabrina Reeves both had seven points for the Hornets.

In other girls basketball action, Spotswood beat Waynesboro 80-28. Riverheads lost a heartbreaker to East Rockingham, coming up just short 44-43.

Buffalo Gap boys basketball lost its first game of the season, falling to Alleghany 68-59. Micah Centerbury led Gap with 18 points. Spotswood beat Waynesboro 90-28.

Buffalo Gap boys, Wilson Memorial girls basketball win

Buffalo Gap got 20 points from Bennett Bowers and 10 each from Tyler Hohenstein and Jackson LaPorte in a 65-44 win over Grace Christian Saturday in boys basketball. Davis Reid led the Warriors with 12 while Ryan Brent added 11 points in the loss. The Bison improved to 5-0 on the season.

In girls basketball Saturday, Wilson Memorial got past Strasburg 45-43. CC Robinson finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Hornets, while Elise Bradley and Laci Norman each added nine points in the win. Also in girls hoops, Western Albemarle beat Stuarts Draft 47-24.

Friday basketball: Buffalo Gap, Fort Defiance boys; Gap girls all winners

Buffalo Gap beat Mountain View 48-28 in boys basketball Friday night. Bennett Bowers led the Bison with 18 points, while Micah Canterbury finished with 11. Charlottesville beat Wilson Memorial 81-58, Fort Defiance topped Rockbridge 48-42 and Waynesboro lost to Amherst 73-46 in boys hoops.

Buffalo Gap girls basketball beat Mountain View 52-32. Ava Cline scored 13 and Bailey Talley had 10 points for the Bison. Wilson Memorial fell to Charlottesville 58-39. Laci Norman's 10 points and seven rebounds led the Hornets in the loss. In other girls games, Parry McCluer beat Riverheads 49-34 and Broadway beat Waynesboro 61-40 on Friday.

Five players score in double figures to lead Fort Defiance girls to win

Fort Defiance beat Monticello 85-43 in girls basketball Thursday night. Trinity Hedrick led five players in double figures with 21 points. Carleyanne Ryder finished with 14, Taliyah Hostetter had 13, Jayden Hostetter scored 12 and Mia Alexander added 11 points in the win.

Also in girls basketball, Mountain View edged Staunton 37-35. Bre Franklin had 17 for Mountain View, while Staunton was led by Sam Swift's 15 and Kourtlyn Stewart's nine points. Stuarts Draft fell to Western Albemarle 43-20. Emma Schmitz had 17 points for the Warriors in the win.

Wilson girls, boys pick up wins; Riverheads opens season with victory

Wilson Memorial beat Monticello 42-36 in girls basketball Wednesday night. Asia Knight led the Hornets with a double-double, 16 points and 12 rebounds. Wilson's CC Robinson pulled down 23 rebounds to go along with her five points in the win.

Wilson's boys also got a win, beating Monticello 59-43 behind Finn Irving's 13 points and eight rebounds. Colton Lavender added 10 points for the Hornets. Riverheads opened its season with a 77-27 win over Bath County. Fort fell to Alleghany County 66-64.

Tuesday high school basketball roundup

Stuarts Draft beat Mountain View 65-45 in boys basketball Tuesday. The Cougars were led by Harley Frame's 20 points, whille Donovan Jenkins added 14 points and Landon Graber scored 11 in the win.

Buffalo Gap's boys team remained unbeaten, but barely, squeaking by Nelson County 41-40. Bennett Bowers led the Bison with 19 points. Staunton beat Broadway 51-32 to improve to 3-0. Waynesboro beat Turner Ashby 56-49.

In girls basketball, Hannah Coffman had 18 points to help Buffalo Gap beat Nelson County 62-31. The Bison's Chloe Emurian added 12 in the win. Stuarts Draft fell to Mountain View 47-34. Bre Franklin had 20 for Mountain View in the win. Draft's Taylor Chappell had nine for the Cougars. Staunton lost to Broadway 63-20.

Turner Ashby beat Waynesboro 68-9. The game marked the 500th career win for TA Coach Rob Lovell. According to the Turner Ashby Twitter account, Lovell is 11th all time on the VHSL list of wins by coaches.

Bowers' 32 powers Buffalo Gap past Alleghany; Grace wins tip-off tournament

Bennett Bowers' 32 points helped lead Buffalo Gap past Alleghany 79-68 Monday night in boys basketball. Micah Canterbury had a double-double in the win with 11 points and 13 rebounds. In all, the Bison had five players score in double figures, with Tyler Hohenstein scoring 11, and Gary Hewitt and Jackson LaPorte adding 10 points each. Hohenstein also had eight rebounds.

Gap is now 2-0 on the season with a home game against Nelson County scheduled for Tuesday night.

Also in boys basketball, Charlottesville beat Wilson Memorial 63-37.

In girls basketball, Buffalo Gap fell to Alleghany 47-20. Ava Cline had seven points to lead the Bison. Charlottesville beat Wilson Memorial 54-32.

This past weekend, Grace Christian's girls basketball beat Christ Chapel Academy 40-33 in the championship game of the Grace Christian School Tip-Off Tournament. Aubrey Greenmun led Grace with 16 points and 13 rebounds as the Warriors improved to 3-0.

In the boys tournament, Grace beat Covenant for the championship 46-36. Justin Hain had 19 points and eight rebounds for Grace, which is also 3-0. Both teams will play at Fresta Valley Friday.

Stuarts Draft, Staunton boys and Buffalo Gap girls pick up wins

Stuarts Draft beat Luray 71-61 in boys basketball Friday night. Donovan Jenkins finished the game with 23 points and 10 rebounds in the win. The Cougars' Landon Graber had 15 points, while Harley frame finished with 13 and Izaiyah Ale Bell scored 12 for Draft.

In other boys action, Staunton beat Rockbridge 62-38.

In girls basketball, Buffalo Gap beat Broadway 50-42. Hannah Coffman finished with 16 points and Avery Bradley had 14 to help lead the Bison to victory. Also, Rockbridge defeated Staunton 29-24.

Wilson Memorial boys win

Finn Irving's 29 points and seven rebounds led Wilson Memorial to a 75-47 win over Liberty-Bedford in boys basketball Thursday night. Lucas Schatz added 10 points and six rebounds in the win. Wilson is now 2-0 on the season.

In girls basketball, Turner Ashby got 20 points from Raevin Washington in a 76-37 win over Fort Defiance Thursday night. Mia Alexander led Fort in the loss with nine points. Trinity Hedrick added six for Fort, which is now 1-1 on the season.

Wilson Memorial fell to Liberty-Bedford 61-27.

Draft, Gap boys; Waynesboro, Riverheads, Gap girls basketball all win

Stuarts Draft's boys beat East Rockingham 51-48 Wednesday night in high school basketball. Donovan Jenkins led the Cougars with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Izaiyah Bell had 16 points and Derrick Moore finished with 11 points in the win.

Meanwhile, Bennett Bowers scored 23 points to help lead Buffalo Gap to a 53-20 win over Nelson County. Jackson LaPorte added 10 points for the Bison.

In girls basketball, Waynesboro beat Heritage 39-37. Sophomore Shyla Williams and junior Kaitlyn Hull both had 10 points for the Little Giants. Riverheads beat Covington 44-30 behind 15 points from Taia Chandller and eight points each from Grace Golladay and Anna Shirley.

Buffalo Gap's beat Nelson County 44-37 while Stuarts Draft fell to East Rock 67-21.

Wilson boys, girls basketball get wins

Lacy Norman and CC Robinson helped lead the Wilson Memorial girls to a win in their basketball opener Tuesday. Wilson beat Monticello 47-36.

Norman finished with a team high 14 points, while Robinson added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Hornets. Elise Bradley and Asia Knight both finished with six points each in the win.

The Wilson boys rolled in its season-opening game, thumping Monticello 74-48. Finn Irving finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in the win.

Four other players scored in double digits for the Hornets: Aiden Podgorski and Eli Irving both had 11 points, while Lucas Schatz and Max Vess scored 10 points each.

In other Shenandoah District boys action, the Staunton boys beat Turner Ashby 60-47 and Fort Defiance beat Rockbridge 50-42. Waynesboro lost to Amherst 60-33.

On the girls side, Turner Ashby beat Staunton 53-22. Sam Swift led Staunton with 22 points in the loss. Fort Defiance topped Rockbridge 59-28.

Stuart Hall hoops wins

Stuart Hall opened its boys basketball season with a 55-41 win over Fuqua School Wednesday night. Tafari Plummer led the Dragons with 24 points, while Efe Emrullah added 14, Chris Deng had 11 and Jackson Hines finished with six.

Stuart Hall is 1-0 on the year and won't play again until Dec. 2 on the road at Randolph Macon Academy. Its next home game is Dec. 4 against St. Michael’s.
