Winter storm could spread snow, ice over the Athens area Saturday and Sunday
The Athens area could see snow or ice or both as a winter storm moves into Northeast Georgia on Saturday night and into Sunday.
The National Weather Service office in Peachtree City reported the possibility of accumulations of 2 to 5 inches in some areas with storm winds reaching 35 mph.
“You are just outside our winter storm watch, but we are in the process of evaluating all of that,” Weather Service meteorologist Dylan Lusk said about noon Friday.
“Basically for Athens, it will be dependent on how quickly the temperature gets down to freezing. We have a really strong low pressure moving in from the west and really cold air filtering down from the Appalachian Mountains and the east,” he said. “If that cold air gets to you guys soon enough and if it’s cold enough, we’ve got some potential for some pretty significant winter weather."
“We’re talking the potential for upwards of 2 inches or more of snow and the potential for a quarter of an inch of ice accumulations,” he said, adding that “the snow doesn’t concern us as much as the ice.”
“There is a lot of uncertainty over the exact extent of that cold air,” he said.
Lusk advised people to keep up with the latest changes in the forecasts.
