Winter weather: Airports in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Texas added to waiver lists

After a few days of spring-like weather, winter has once again tightened its grip on parts of the Rocky Mountains and areas of Texas and Oklahoma, prompting flight cancellations at airports in Denver and Salt Lake City.

In fact, Denver International Airport, which saw about three inches of snow, had 176 cancellations and more than 600 delays on Monday, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware. Operations have since gotten back under control with just 17 cancellations and 42 delays as of 11 a.m. EST Tuesday morning.

The storm, dubbed Winter Storm Kade, is expected to move across the Plains states and the interior Northeast over the next few days.

On Tuesday afternoon, new waivers were issued for airports in Illinois and Missouri as well as additional airports in Texas and Oklahoma. Those are on top of the waivers previously issued for Colorado, Utah, Texas and Oklahoma.

The waivers allow impacted passengers to reschedule their travel without incurring a penalty. More airports are likely to be added as the storm moves eastward, so check back frequently for updates.

The current list of waivers includes the following as of 1:30 p.m. EST, though travelers should check the airline websites for full details and restrictions:

American: Passengers who booked travel by Feb. 3 and who were due to travel to, from or through DFW on Wednesday can reschedule their flights for any time between Wednesday and Saturday as long as they keep the same departure and destination cities.

American passengers who booked travel by Feb. 4 and were scheduled to fly to, from or through the following airports in Texas and Oklahoma can rebook travel through Saturday:

  • Texas: Abilene, Lubbock, Wichita Falls

  • Oklahoma: Lawton/Fort Sill, Oklahoma City, Tulsa

Delta: The waiver covers travel to, from or through DFW; Dallas Love Field; and Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Tickets must be reissued and rescheduled travel must begin no later than Saturday, Feb. 8.

Frontier: Passengers who were due to travel to, from or through the following airports on Feb. 3-4 may make one itinerary change, including origin and destination city: Salt Lake City, Utah; Denver; and Colorado Springs, Colorado. Travel must be completed by Feb. 23, and customers whose flights are canceled may request refunds.

Southwest: Passengers scheduled to fly to, from the following cities on the following dates may rebook their original cabin or travel standby within 14 days of their original travel date:

  • Colorado: Denver (Feb. 3-4);

  • Illinois: Chicago Midway (Feb. 5-6)

  • Indiana: Indianapolis (Feb. 6)

  • Missouri: St. Louis (Feb. 5)

  • Oklahoma: Oklahoma City (Feb. 4-5); Tulsa (Feb. 5)

  • Texas: Amarillo, Lubbock and Midland/Odessa (Feb. 4-5); Dallas Love Field (Feb. 5)

Spirit: The airline's waiver covers travel to, from or through DFW on Wednesday and is good through Saturday.

United: Passengers who booked travel by Feb. 1 and were scheduled to fly to, from or through Salt Lake City and the following Colorado airports on Monday can rebook new travel on or before Thursday, Feb. 6: Denver, Aspen, Colorado Springs, Durango, Grand Junction, Gunnison and Hayden.
