Winter storm in Shasta County: School, transportation, event closures on Friday

With as much as eight inches of snow on the ground in Redding, some schools are closed, transportation and services are delayed and events are canceled on Friday through the weekend.

Here is what we know about closures Feb. 24 through 26.

Warming centers operate Friday only in Redding, Shasta Lake

Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency is operating warming centers on Friday only at these locations:

  • Redding Library Community Room, 1100 Parkview Ave., Redding

  • Shasta Lake Visitor’s Center, 1525 Median Ave., Shasta Lake

Warming centers will operate from noon to 6 p.m. on Feb. 24 at the Redding Library. Hours at the Shasta Lake Visitor's Center are 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Services available to everyone include electrical outlets needed to charge electrical devices and operate medical equipment. Water will also be available.

Shasta College in-person classes resume Saturday

All Shasta College Campus locations resumed normal operations for activities and events at 3 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2023. In-person classes will resume operations at their regularly scheduled day/time starting Saturday, February 25, 2023. Online classes were not impacted and will continue regular operations. Shasta College staff are to resume normal work schedules starting on Saturday, February 25, 2023, unless directed otherwise by their supervisor. Snowshoe Race at Mount Shasta Ski Park postponed

Mount Shasta Nordic Center announced that it has postponed Saturday’s Snowshoe Race to Sunday, March 12 because this week’s snowstorm buried the marked race course under 3 feet of snow.Officials said their parking lot had not been cleared as of mid-day Friday and urged patrons to call on Saturday going forward to check on conditions. Information will also be provided on the park’s homepage and social media site.

Schools closed

While most schools are already closed for Presidents Week, those that planned to be in session Friday are all likely closed, according to Shasta County Office of Education spokesperson Kerri Schuette said.

Schools that reported they were closed Friday were Redding School of the Arts and Dunsmuir High School.

Shasta College's Redding campuses are closed, too. Student services are not available.

Medical offices closed

Hill Country Community Clinic and Hill Country Health and Wellness Center clinics are closed. Closures include:

  • The Redding clinic at 1401 Gold Street, Suite A, Redding

  • Center of Hope at 1201 Industrial St. in Redding

  • The Round Mountain clinic at 29632 Highway 299 East

Updated: County offices closed, garbage pickup delayed

Shasta County offices closed for the day on Friday "due to snow and weather conditions," county spokesman David Maung said.

Maung also announced the following changes to waste collection services:

  • Waste Management waste collection services are canceled Friday. All normally scheduled Friday collections are postponed until Saturday, Feb. 25.

  • The West Central Landfill will be closed Friday. If weather permits, staff hope to reopen on Saturday for normal hours: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Burney Disposal is running with a few slight delays. Some locations are delayed until Saturday.

Updated: Transportation down Friday morning

With roads still covered in snow and icy, RABA buses are not running Friday morning, Redding's RABA downtown hub reported.

People "should avoid travel if possible until weather conditions have improved," Maung said.

Flight delays: Calls to the Redding Airport administration office were not returned Friday morning, but United Airlines reported its 6:15 a.m. flight to San Francisco (SFO) was delayed. As of 9:45 a.m., other United flights planned to Los Angeles (LAX) at 1:15 p.m. and to San Francisco at 2:25 p.m. were reported on time, according to the airline; as was an Alaska Airlines flight to Seattle that's scheduled to fly out of Redding at 5:20 p.m.

Events canceled

The Shasta College art gallery will be closed on Friday.
