Winter storm warning: Snow expected to upend Asheville Monday morning commute

A winter storm warning is in effect between 10 p.m. Jan. 2 to noon Jan. 3.

Rain and snow showers are expected late tonight and overnight with several inches of snow accumulation by 10 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

The forecast calls for snow showers likely, "mainly before 10 a.m."

Heavy snow is expected with total snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches across Asheville and vicinity. Higher elevations are expected to get of 4 to 6 inches, NWS says.

NWS recommends only driving in an emergency because it anticipates dangerous conditions ahead of Monday morning’s commute.

“Only travel in an emergency. If you must travel, keep a flashlight, food, water, and a warm blanket in your vehicle in case of an emergency.”

Snow showers are likely done by 10 a.m. Monday.
