Winter weather advisory issued for most of Massachusetts through Friday evening

Most of Massachusetts is under a winter weather advisory due to a weather system that could bring up to four inches of snow to some areas.

The advisory is in effect for parts of Middlesex, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, Worcester, Essex, and Norfolk counties until 7 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

Freezing drizzle will be the concern for the Thursday evening commute before the snow moves in Friday.

As temperatures gradually drop throughout the day Thursday, rain could cause slippery sidewalks, roads, and bridges, the NWS said.

Some communities in the northern Worcester Hills and the northern Berkshires, especially those at higher elevations, will be near the freezing point this afternoon with patchy ice developing.

Motorists are urged to slow down and use caution while driving in those areas.

Precipitation is expected to return by Friday morning and become steadier and heavier midday into the afternoon.

Total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected in central, eastern, northeastern and western Massachusetts. Areas of higher elevations in central and western Massachusetts could see up to 4 inches.

“Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute,” the NWS said in a statement.

The snow and rain will tape off by Friday evening.
