Winter weather cancellations, closures, delays in Austin area

A winter storm warning is in effect for the Austin metro area and the Hill Country until 10 a.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service said.

Areas under the storm warning include Travis, Hays, Bastrop, Caldwell and Williamson counties in the Austin metro area, and neighboring Hill Country counties, such as Burnet, Blanco, Llano and Gillespie. Listed below are weather-related cancellations, closures or delays:

Austin school district: AISD cancels school Friday

  • Thursday: Austin schools and offices will be closed. District officials will continue to monitor weather conditions for Friday.

  • Friday: All Austin schools and offices will remain closed Friday.

Austin Community College

  • Friday: ACC’s Riverside and South Austin campuses will remain closed Friday because of ongoing power outages. On-campus classes, work, and activities at these locations are canceled for Friday. All other ACC campuses will open on a regular schedule.

Austin Public Health

  • Friday: Public offices are back open. Cold weather shelter coordination, disease surveillance, food safety, COVID-19/Mpox/flu response continues.

Austin utilities

Austin municipal courts

  • Thursday: Austin Municipal Court and Downtown Austin Community Court services will remain closed except for the Violet KeepSafe Storage program. VKS will remain operational from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for those experiencing homelessness.

Austin Resource Recovery

  • Thursday: Curbside collections will resume on Thursday, but not at full capacity. Delays should be expected. Carts, bulk and brush items should be left at the curb so staff can collect material once road conditions improve. Collections will continue into the weekend. The Recycle and Reuse Drop-off Center and public brush drop-off at the Hornsby Bend Biosolids Management Plant will be closed.

Austin Public Library

  • Wednesday: All Austin Public Library locations will be closed, except for Terrazas and Little Walnut Creek Library branches, which will be available as warming centers on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Austin Regional Clinics

  • Thursday: ARC clinics open at 1 p.m., including lab and radiology, for in-person and telemedicine visits. ARC Bee Cave and ARC Quarry Lake (Austin) are closed because of power outages. Those appointments are being moved to other clinics if possible. All After Hours Clinics will be open during their regular hours tonight, 5-9 p.m.

Bastrop school district

  • Thursday: All district schools will remain closed, including STARS.

Capital Metro

  • Thursday: CapMetro plans to resume limited service, including Bus, Pickup, CapMetro Access and MetroBike, beginning at 10 a.m. with more buses and increased frequency service to begin by noon. Customers who have trips scheduled before 10 a.m. will be contacted to determine if appointments can be rescheduled.

  • Friday: CapMetro is planning to return to regular fixed-route service levels for bus, including Flyer and Express routes, CapMetro Access, MetroBike and Pickup services. CapMetro Rail will not operate Friday as crews continue work to restore power to 16 grade crossings and seven signals, as well as to clear debris along the 32-mile commuter rail line. The agency will run the Route 454 bus for customers who would otherwise use CapMetro Rail. It serves the Leander, Lakeline, Howard and downtown stations.

Concordia University

  • Wednesday: All in-person classes are canceled. The dining hall, residential halls, gym, and student development center will remain open. Services like Student Central and the writing, math, and speaking centers will be offered virtually.

Del Valle school district

  • Thursday: All Dell Valle ISD schools and offices will remain closed through Thursday.

Dripping Springs school district

  • Thursday: School is canceled, but all after-school activities will resume.

Eanes school district

  • Thursday: All Eanes schools, offices and child care centers will be closed. All athletics, extra- and co-curricular events for Wednesday night have been postponed or rescheduled, including practices, rentals and games. For more updates parents are encouraged to visit or

  • Friday: Eanes schools will remain closed. Officials cited issues with power, a boil-water notice and downed trees on roads and campuses.

Elgin school district

  • Thursday: Elgin has canceled classes. All schools and facilities will remain closed through Thursday.

  • Friday: All schools and facilities will remain closed and all after-school activities are canceled.

Fort Hood

  • Thursday: The Fort Hood Senior Commander has authorized delayed reporting for Fort Hood personnel. Mission essential personnel will report to work at normal duty time; Department of the Army civilians will report to work at noon; soldiers and airmen will report to work at 1 p.m.

Georgetown school district

  • Thursday: District officials have canceled school and all school-sponsored activities. All district campuses and facilities will be closed.

  • Friday: All facilities will reopen on Friday, but all school start times and bus pickup times will be delayed by two hours.

Harmony Public Schools

  • Thursday: Harmony Public Schools-Central Texas campuses and offices are closed for students and staff.

  • Friday: All Central Texas campuses and offices will remain closed. Classes will resume on Monday.

Hays County school district

  • Thursday: Hays school district campuses and offices will be closed. Officials announced that all classes will resume on Friday.

Hutto school district

  • Thursday: Hutto district officials have canceled school.

IDEA Public Schools

  • Thursday: All IDEA public school operations have been canceled across the greater Austin region.

  • Friday: All school operations, including after school, have been canceled.

KIPP Texas

Friday: Due to continued power outages, all KIPP Texas-Austin schools will remain closed on Friday.

Lago Vista school district

  • Thursday: Classes are canceled and all school offices will be closed.

  • Thursday: Make-up soccer and basketball games from Monday and Tuesday are scheduled for Thursday. Soccer will play Florence at home on Thursday and basketball will play at Jarrell on Thursday, normal times.

Laguna Gloria

  • Thursday: Laguna Gloria will be closed.

  • Friday: Normal hours will resume on Friday, including classes at The Art School at Laguna Gloria.

Lake Travis school district

  • Thursday: Lake Travis schools will be closed. The district plans to announce further updates Thursday afternoon.

Leander school district

  • Thursday: All classes and activities are canceled.

  • Friday: All classes are canceled. Authorized events will be allowed on a limited basis.

Manor school district

  • Thursday: All Manor campuses and administrative offices will be closed.

  • Friday: The district will remain closed Friday.

Marble Falls school district

  • Thursday: Marble Falls school classes and school activities are canceled.

  • Friday: The district announced Thursday that all school activities will resume on Friday.


  • Thursday: Charter school, offices and all afterschool activities canceled.

  • Friday: Campus remains closed because of a lack of power.

Pflugerville school district

  • Thursday: Pflugerville has canceled classes, as well as before- and after-school activities. All schools and offices will also be closed.

  • Friday: Due to continued power outages at campuses, all schools and offices will be closed.

Round Rock school district

  • Thursday: Round Rock has canceled classes, as well as before- and after-school activities. All schools and offices will also be closed.

  • Friday: Round Rock schools and offices will be closed Friday because of power outages. Parents, guardians, staff and community members are encouraged to visit, the RRISD Twitter account @RoundRockISD or for updates and additional information.

San Marcos school district

  • Thursday: District officials canceled school for San Marcos students.

Southwestern University

  • Thursday: The school has closed campus and suspended normal on-campus operations. Faculty can hold classes remotely at their discretion, and staff who can work remotely should so so.

St. Edward's University

  • Thursday: The university will remain closed until 12:30 p.m. All classes and activities will resume at that time.

Taylor school district

  • Thursday: All school classes and activities are canceled.

Texas State University

  • Thursday: The San Marcos and Round Rock campuses will delay opening until noon.

University of Texas

  • Thursday: The University of Texas will remain closed and all classes are canceled. UT shuttle buses will not run.

We Are Blood

  • Thursday: Donations centers will re-open. People are encouraged to make appointments. There will be a critical need for blood and platelet donations, especially O type blood and any platelets because of being closed.

Williamson County

  • Thursday: Williamson County offices will remain closed on Thursday.

  • Thursday: The Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter will reopen to the public on Thursday at 2 p.m.

  • Friday: Williamson County offices will reopen on Friday. The next Commissioners Court meeting will take place Tuesday.

Wimberley school district

  • Thursday: All school campuses and offices will be closed.

Areas under the storm warning should expect significant icing, with ice accumulations of up to a half-inch possible. Forecasters warn that road travel could be "very hazardous" and are discouraging any non-emergency travel.

"If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency," the weather service said in a bulletin Monday. "Prepare for possible power outages."
