Winter weather: Snowfall amount updated for Lenoir County

The NWS in Newport is reporting lower snowfall amounts for Kinston and Lenoir County as well as much of eastern North Carolina.

According to NWS Meteorologist Mike Lee, snow accumulations for Lenoir County, as of 6 a.m. will be only around an inch. He said this third storm within a week doesn’t have as much moisture and is a lot dryer, contributing to less snow.

“We are still expecting to see snowfall, it’s just going to be a little bit less from what we were expecting yesterday,” Lee said

The high for Friday will be around 48 degrees with the low getting down to 30, he said. The rain will transition to snow and on Saturday the temperature will be below freezing for most of the day, and then begin crashing to about 16 degrees that night. The chance for snow is 50%.

Winds will be out of the northeast Friday at 5 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 16 mph. The chance of rain is 50%. Saturday will be mostly cloudy with northwest winds 15 to 20 mph.

The storm will move out of the area quicker, Lee said. However, there will still be a lot of cold air. This system will not pack the punch of last weekend’s storm, but caution should still be taken out on the road.

“Any accumulation that melts is going to become problematic, with that hard freeze coming Saturday night, black ice will be a problem. We certainly urge folks to be cautious while traveling,” Lee said.

Williamston and surrounding areas, which were forecast for upwards of 3 inches will not see that amount.

“Snowfall amounts for those locations have dropped as well. We had a winter storm watch in effect for those areas but right now we have a winter weather advisory, which is a step below the full winter weather warning,”

The accumulation for those areas will be around an inch, he said.
