Wintery weather (even snow) is coming to the Triangle this week. What will we see?

A storm system is expected to impact the Triangle region late Friday night and into Saturday. It will provide little (or no) icy accrual before the changeover to rain, according to the Raleigh National Weather Service’s Wednesday morning forecast.

A powdery white covering isn’t in the forecast this weekend, said NWS Raleigh lead meteorologist Phil Badgett. But icy weather is expected.

Snow forecast in the Triangle this weekend

Northern Orange County will get some snow, but “the snowflakes will only be 10 to 20,000 feet up in the air. They’ll fall through warmer air, totally melt as rain drops and freeze on surfaces as they hit the ground, becoming ice accrual,” Badgett told The News & Observer.

“It’ll be just a little too warm to actually see some snow this time.”

Raleigh, Durham and the rest of the Triangle might only experience a brief period of light freezing rain from late Friday night into Saturday mid-morning, though some more southern towns will likely only experience regular rain that’s not icy. Wintery weather will subside by late morning, bringing all rain for the next few hours, says NWS Raleigh.

“But it’ll be a chilly rain. The highs on Saturday are only in the low 40s,” Badgett said.

Precipitation in the Triangle is not expected Wednesday during the day nor evening time.
