Wintery weather has indefinitely delayed the reopening of the John A. Roebling Bridge.

The suspension bridge between Cincinnati and Covington was to reopen Monday, Jan. 24, after an extensive maintenance project.

But the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said in a news release that the winter weather has delayed concrete reaching its full strength on the south side approach of the bridge.

The cabinet cannot provide a specific reopening date now, it said.

The bridge has been closed to vehicular traffic since Feb. 15, 2021, and was originally scheduled to reopen to traffic by the end of November.

Engineers with the transportation cabinet then determined that additional repairs were needed, including replacing the expansion joints on the northern approach.

The project includes masonry work and the repair and replacement of sections of sandstone on the north and south anchorages and towers. Other work includes minor deck and sidewalk repair.

A pedestrian sidewalk on the bridge that has been open throughout the project will remain open.
