Wintry mix could snarl commute in Southern Tier, Central NY tonight, Wednesday

Southern Tier residents are bracing for a pre-Thanksgiving week blast of winter-like weather, including snow, freezing rain and traces of ice.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Southern Tier Region and central New York state, beginning at 5 p.m. today and continuing until 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The forecast calls for a wintry mix of precipitation, with total snow accumulations of one to four inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze.

More snow could fall across higher elevations, the National Weather Service said.

Less than an inch of snow is forecast for Binghamton, according to the Weather Service, while Elmira could receive one to two inches.

Two to three inches are possible in the Steuben County town of Bath, the Weather Service said.

Further west, less than a half inch of snow is expected overnight Tuesday through Wednesday morning in Hornell, while Wellsville could see one to two inches of snow during that period, the Weather Service said.

The Weather Service said snow will begin tonight before likely changing to a wintry mix of rain, freezing rain, sleet and perhaps some lingering snow Wednesday morning.

Temperatures will be in the upper 20s to mid-30s through the overnight event.
