Wintry mix of wet and wind to hit the East Coast over the weekend

Winter weather was in no hurry to reach New York City, but it’s here.

The National Weather Service issued a coastal flood watch for parts of the Bronx and northern Queens as well as coastal communities on Long Island, where a gale warning is in place Friday.

There’s potential for freezing rain Friday night, rolling into Saturday morning, as well as a “low threat of thunderstorms,” forecasters advise. Low pressure could bring “heavy” rainfall to the city.

According to the Weather Channel, light rain could come after 5 p.m. accompanied by wind gusts beginning around 11 p.m.

Snow and sleet are expected to give way to rain as the evening progresses. Travel could be impacted in the tri-state area. Snow is expected to stick around the longest north of I-287, ABC News Reports. Temperatures in the city will drop just below 40 degrees overnight before reaching a high of 46 degrees Saturday afternoon. Sunday is expected to be mostly sunny.

The Weather Channel’s 10-day forecast also calls for snow showers the following weekend after what should be a dry week.

Storms appear to be settling off nearly the entire East Coast with the New England area getting the worst of the wet weather.

New Yorkers have enjoyed a relatively mild winter, where the first significant snowfall — a 1.8-inch accumulation in Central Park — finally came on the last day of February. Flights out of LaGuardia Airport, which saw 2.7 inches of accumulation, were impacted by that Monday night downfall.

Prior to this week, the city recorded just 0.4 inches of snow accumulation this season. The city broke a 50-year record for its longest winter without snow at the end of January. It had been 328 days since a measurable snowfall dusted New York City.
