STORY: World Surf League have announced the five nominees for the 'Wipeout of the Year' category, an award that shows surfing is one of the most dangerous sports in the world.

And it is no surprise that Jaws, an infamous wave in the Pacific Ocean off the Hawaiian island of Maui features three times in the category, unseating Italian Francisco Porcella, and locals Keala Kennelly and Torrey Meister, whose fall was most spectacular of all.

Nazare in Portugal, another well-known big wave, accounted for Brazil's Felipe Cesarane in January, while another Atlantic wave, off Ireland's Mullaghmore Head, was too much for Morocco's Jerome Sahyoun.

The public can vote for their favourite wipeout online between July 20 and July 23, with the winner announced on July 27.
