Wireless carriers keep and store data for years, can provide it to police

According to carrier letters made public by the Federal Communications Commission last week, the country’s largest phone carriers not only track you every time you make a call, it can store the data for months and even provide it to law enforcement.

According to CNN Business, cell phones provide a steady stream of info to the likes of AT&T and Verizon, using cell towers to to coordinate the users’ exact location.

The company letters also highlight how telecom companies provide info upon government request. According to privacy advocates, that information can reveal whether a person has visited an abortion clinic, even if the data was collected through an unrelated action on the network.

Officials have calls on the FCC’s Enforcement Bureau to investigate whether wireless carriers are doing enough to divulge to customers how their information is handled.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
