Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources asking the public for tips on illegal elk shootings

MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) – Authorities with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) say they are asking for tips from the public to help with investigations into two different illegal elk shootings.

According to a release, the two illegal shootings occurred during the 2022 gun deer season with officials responding to mortality signals from the elk’s monitoring collar during two different instances on two different days.

DNR staff say they first responded to a mortality signal from an elk on Sunday, November 20, 2022, where the elk was found on private property near Whitney Road in the town of Knapp. DNR staff then responded to a second mortality signal on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, where the was found near Castle Mound Road and Brockway Road in the town of Brockway.

Officials report that necropsy tests confirm both of the two breeding cow elk were illegally shot and are losses to the elk population growth.

DNR officials say public tips were asked for when the investigation started in late 2022 but the information provided up to this point was inconclusive and more information is needed.

Those with the DNR say no tip is too small and anyone with tips of any kind can share them by calling the DNR’s confidential violation hotline at 1-800-847-9367 or by submitting the tips online.
