State Sen. Andre Jacque handily defeated challenger Andrea Gage-Michaels to win re-election to the 1st District seat in Tuesday's election.

With 98% of precincts reporting, Jacque, R-De Pere, got 47,608 votes, or 59.7% of the ballots cast, compared to 32,137 votes (39.3%) for Gage-Michaels, D-De Pere.

This will be Jacque's second consecutive term as a state senator after representing the 2nd Assembly District for four consecutive terms from 2011 to 2019. He first ran for the Wisconsin Senate in a special election in summer 2018 to replace Sen. Frank Lasee, winning the GOP primary but losing the special election to Caleb Frostman. However, Jacque defeated Frostman in a rematch in the November general election later that year.

Gage-Michaels served one term on the Sun Prairie City Council and as a legislative aide for State Sen. Jim Sullivan.

Other than Frostman's brief tenure, the 1st Senate District — which covers all of Door and Kewaunee counties and parts of Brown County and northern Manitowoc and Calumet counties — has been represented by a Republican for 45 years, starting when Alan Lasee won a special election for the seat in 1977. Alan Lasee retained the seat until retiring before the 2010 election, when his cousin, Frank Lasee, won the seat and held it until he resigned to lead the state Department of Workforce Development in December 2017.
