Wisconsin kindergarten student, 6, killed while waiting for bus; family member injured

PLAINFIELD, Wis. – A 6-year-old girl was killed Monday and a family member was injured after being struck by a car while waiting for the girl's school bus.

The kindergarten student was waiting to board her bus around 7:15 a.m. local time. The vehicle that hit the student and her relative was traveling in the same direction as the bus, according to a news release from the Tri-County Area School District.

The bus was stopped at the time of the incident, and its lights were flashing, according to the release.

The injured family member was taken to a hospital. The school district did not have information regarding her condition.

The Tri-County school district has slightly more than 600 students, including 48 kindergartners.

The Waushara County Sheriff's Department is handling the investigation in conjunction with the Wisconsin State Patrol.
