Wisconsin man arrested for OWI after two-vehicle crash causes massive gas leak

BEAVER DAM, Wis. (WFRV) – A 67-year-old Wisconsin man was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated after causing a two-vehicle crash and erupting a massive gas leak.

According to the Beaver Dam Police Department, officers were sent to a two-vehicle crash in Beaver Dam on Saturday, April 27, shortly before 5:00 p.m. near the intersection of North Spring Street and East Burnett Street.

A preliminary investigation revealed one of the vehicles had hit a building. Upon arrival, officers confirmed the vehicle had actually hit a natural gas meter and service line on the side of the building of a business in the 1000 block of North Spring Street.

Due to the large gas leak, adjacent residences and businesses were evacuated. The roads surrounding the area remained closed so crews could repair the leak and ensure the area’s safety.

The initial traffic crash investigation showed a vehicle operating westbound on East Burnett Street failed to yield from a stop sign, causing a collision with a southbound vehicle on North Spring Street. The southbound vehicle then lost control and hit the building and gas line.

The Beaver Dam Police Department says alcohol was believed to be a factor in the crash, and an OWI investigation was conducted. As a result, a 67-year-old man was arrested for operating while under the influence, his first offense.
