Wisconsin man dies in Upper Peninsula snowmobile accident

A snowmobiling crash in Iron County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula ended with one man dead, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said in a news release.

Todd Lisowe, a 42-year-old resident of New Holstein, Wisconsin, died in the incident, which occurred when his snowmobile collided with a trail groomer around 11:45 a.m. CST, according to the DNR. Lisowe was pronounced dead at the scene after attempts to resuscitate him were made, the DNR said.

The incident occurred on a snowmobile trail south of Crystal Falls, as a group of four snowmobilers traveled back to Wisconsin from Marquette County. No other drivers or passengers were injured in the incident, the DNR said.

Officials said the crash occurred during clear weather conditions, attributing the cause to excessive speed. Excessive speed serves as the primary cause for severe snowmobile accidents in Michigan, DNR said.

This incident was the 15th snowmobile death in Michigan this winter, the DNR said. Last winter, there were 13 snowmobiling deaths. And during the 2020-2021 winter, there were 12 deaths.

Officials encourage snowmobile drivers to exercise caution, including by driving sober, driving at appropriate speeds and using the right side of snowmobiling trails. Additional information can be found on the Michigan DNR website.
