Wisconsin State Patrol to conduct aerial traffic enforcement in Door County this Sunday
MADISON - Sunday drivers in Door County will be watched not just from ground level but also from the skies this weekend.
That's because the Wisconsin State Patrol’s Air Support Unit pilots are scheduled to keep an eye out from their aircraft for traffic violations along State 57 in Door County this Sunday, Sept. 24, weather permitting.
In a news release announcing the effort, the State Patrol said its primary mission is public safety, and the goal of announcing aerial patrols in advance is to encourage voluntary compliance with traffic laws, not simply to stop or issue citations to drivers who violate them.
According to the State Patrol, it’s much easier from the air to spot drivers who are speeding or driving aggressively. When a pilot observes a violation, they communicate with ground-based units to initiate a traffic stop.
The Door County patrol is the last of five aerial enforcement efforts planned in five Wisconsin counties this week. Pilots also will patrol over Interstate 43 in Manitowoc County on Tuesday, Sept. 19; I-41 in Fond du Lac County on Wednesday, Sept. 20; U.S. 51 in Oneida County on Friday, Sept. 22; and I-43 in Walworth County on Saturday, Sept. 23.
