Wise County grass fire requires resident evacuation near County Road 3701 in Runaway Bay

Wise County residents along one road in Runaway Bay were evacuated due to a wildfire Wednesday, according to a social media post by the Wise County Office of Emergency Management.

The fire was reported at around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday near Hyde Cemetery in Runaway Bay, close to County Road 3701 and Valley Ridge Drive.

Runaway Bay is about an hour northwest of Fort Worth.

In a 2:30 p.m. update Wednesday, the Wise County Office of Emergency Management said to prepare for evacuations, but that they were not necessary “at this time.”

At 2:55 p.m., the Runaway Bay Police Department started evacuating residents on Port O Call Drive and the fire was moving northeast, according to the Office of Emergency Management.

The evacuated area consisted of about 200 structures at risk, including homes, garages, outbuildings, and other types of buildings, according to a report by the Wise County Messenger.

Evacuations stretched to Cimmarron Trail to the west and to the intersection of U.S. 380 and Runaway Bay Drive, the Messenger reported.

Evacuated residents were allowed to return home around 8:30 p.m., according to the emergency management office.

The fire was 10 acres when it was first reported.

The Texas A&M Forest Service and ground resources were deployed, according to the Wise County Messenger.

In an update about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Texas A&M Forest Service said that the fire, named the Boones Creek Fire, had grown to an estimated 80 acres but was 70% contained. Crews continued to build and improve a containment line around the perimeter and monitor any remaining hot spots in the fire Wednesday night, the forest service said in a tweet.

On Thursday morning, “Multiple state resources returned ... and will continue work throughout the day to ensure the fire is no longer a hazard,” the emergency management office said.
