Brunswick Today Newsletter: Wishing on a snowflake and development in 2024

Greetings and welcome to this week's newsletter, brought to you by me, StarNews reporter Renee Spencer.

While I'm usually a beach-loving girl, I miss living in the mountains this time of the year because I desperately want to see another white Christmas.

The last time I saw snow at Christmastime, I was about 18 years old and living in Statesville. I can remember sitting in my living room beside the Christmas tree and watching the snow fall. In my mind, the image is beautiful. (Later that day, I slipped on some ice as I was going to get the mail and my neighbor watched as I struggled to get back on my feet and limp inside. But right now, let’s focus on the good stuff.)

I can remember one other white Christmas — December of 1989. I was just 9 years old and living in Durham when we experienced a blizzard. Santa left a sled under the tree that year — funny how he knew snow was in in the forecast — and I put it to good use. But it was a bit scary, too. Much of the state, including the Wilmington area, was under a thick blanket of snow for days, and there were power outages with below-freezing temps. A bad combination. Check out the StarNews gallery for images from the White Christmas of 1989.

Will we have a white Christmas this year? StarNews reporter Gareth McGrath examines the likelihood of that and more in his story. Be sure to check it out.

Even if we don’t have snow next weekend, I can still enjoy lots of hot cocoa, family time, and (much to my husband’s chagrin) hours of Hallmark Christmas movies. By the way, two of my favorites, Christmas in Conway and USS Christmas, were filmed in the Wilmington area. Check out StarNews reporter John Staton’s story for more details.

Here we grow again

In addition to celebrating the season, it's time to start thinking about 2024. In Brunswick County, that means more growth. StarNews reporter Jamey Cross takes a look at what's next for development in Leland.

Around Christmas, talk of "jelly" usually brings up images of Clark Griswold's Jelly of the Month Club Christmas bonus. But this year, it just reminds me of The Jelly Cabinet, Wilmington's newest bakery. StarNews food and dining reporter Allison Ballard has the details. Also, check out her story on Southport's new dim sum restaurant.
