The Witcher confirms season 3 return date with first-look teaser trailer

A first-look trailer for season 3 of The Witcher has been released, along with a confirmed release date.

The next instalment of the fantasy series, based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels, will mark Henry Cavill’s final outing as Geralt of Rivia, after he announced that he was passing the mantle onto Liam Hemsworth for the fourth season.

However, before Cavill exits the hit adaptation, Geralt has some scores to settle, monsters to hunt and swords to wield and fans don't have long to wait to see it.

On the show's official Twitter account, it was announced that volume one of the third season of the show will land on Netflix on June 29, 2023, with volume two set to drop on the platform on July 27, 2023.

Along with the first trailer, they tweeted: "This summer, everything changes. The Witcher Season 3 begins on the 29th of June #thewitcher."

The official synopsis of the third season reads: "As monarchs, mages and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it.

"Entrusted with Ciri's magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl's untapped powers; instead, they discover they've landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line – or risk losing each other forever."

Alongside the Man of Steel star, Freya Allen will return as Ciri, Anya Chalotra is back as Yennefer, Joey Batey as Jaskier, Royce Pierreson as Istredd, Anna Shaffer as Triss and Kim Bodnia as Vesemir.

Back in October, Cavill announced that he had decided to exit the show, as he sent his best wishes to The Hunger Games actor who is set to replace him in season four.

In a heartfelt statement, Cavill said: "My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for season four.

"In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam's take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men."

He added: "Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find."

The Witcher seasons 1-2 are now streaming on Netflix. Spin-off The Witcher: Blood Origin is also streaming on Netflix.
