'Without delay!': Trump urges Republicans to move quickly on Ginsburg replacement

President Donald Trump on Saturday said Republicans have an “obligation” to quickly fill Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat on the Supreme Court.

“We were put in this position of power and importance to make decisions for the people who so proudly elected us, the most important of which has long been considered to be the selection of United States Supreme Court Justices,” Trump tweeted, tagging the GOP party handle. “We have this obligation, without delay!”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has vowed to hold a vote for Trump’s nominee, igniting a political firestorm between Democrats and Republicans 45 days before Election Day.

Democratic lawmakers and party nominee Joe Biden have said the winner of the November election should pick who fills Ginsburg’s seat.

Trump is expected to nominate his pick as soon as the middle of next week, according to two people familiar with the plans.

The president is scheduled to hold a campaign rally on Saturday evening in Fayetteville, N.C., his fourth visit to the battleground state in less than a month.

In a gaggle on the White House lawn with reporters later Saturday, Trump said, “We want to respect the process. I think it’s going to go very quickly, actually,” according to a pool report.

He said he expects the nominee to be announced “next week” and it will “most likely” be a woman.

Shortly after holding a re-election rally in Minnesota on Friday, Trump responded with surprise to the news of the passing of Ginsburg, who he called a “titan of the law.”

Trump later said in a statement that Ginsburg was “renowned for her brilliant mind and her powerful dissents at the Supreme Court."

“Her opinions, including well-known decisions regarding the legal equality of women and the disabled, have inspired all Americans, and generations of great legal minds," the statement said.
