WNC's only MS Walk is set for April at Fletcher's Bill Moore Community Park

Walk MS has raised over $1 billion since 1946 to fuel the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s mission to cure MS while empowering people affected by MS to live their best lives, according to www.walkms.org.

On April 23, walkers of all ages will have an opportunity to be part of Walk MS, which will be held once again at Bill Moore Community Park (formerly Fletcher Community Park), 85 Howard Gap Road in Fletcher. This is Western North Carolina’s only MS Walk.

Participants can join a team, form a team, or walk as individuals to help reach the goal of funding education and research to ultimately find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis.

Registration is available by going to www.walkms.org and typing in “Fletcher NC” to find the Fletcher walk. From there, participants can choose to learn about the team led by local volunteer Jane Sutton by typing in her team’s name: “Quinn Music Kazoo Squad.” This is Sutton’s 12th year of walking and volunteering.

Sutton promises team members: “A kazoo and a bandana is in your future."

Walkers can also register beginning at 1 p.m. on the day of the event. After registration, participants will gather at the Steelcase Shelter. At 2 p.m., the walk begins with fully accessible routes that are either one or two miles.

“All routes lead to a world free of MS,” Sutton said.

Walkers be greeted and treated at the end of the walk by folks from Howdy Homemade Ice Cream, offering their ice cream treats. There will also be live music. Anyone who raises $100 will receive a commemorative T-shirt. Walkers can bring their dogs (on a leash only). Service animals are always welcome.
