Woburn Jeweler Closing After 48 Years

The store is closing ahead of an overhaul of the Woburn Mall with no plans of reopening.

WOBURN, MA -- Cooper Jewelers, which has been in business in various locations in Woburn for more than 48 years, will close early next year. In a message to customers, the store said it would close Jan. 6 and being holding a sale through the end of the year to clear its inventory. The store is located in the Woburn Mall.

Howie and Roz Cooper started the store, and its now managed by their daughter, Donna Sack and her husband Bob. The Woburn Mall is scheduled for a makeover, and the January 6 closing date of Copper coincides with the start of that project.

In July, an architectural firm hired by Woburn Mall owner Edens LLC offered a first glimpse of a proposed makeover of the property, which includes 400 apartments, an eight-screen building and an open-air retail concept similar to those found in so-called lifestyle centers in Lynnfield, Dedham and Somerville. Hartford-based Amenta Emma Architects said Edens hopes to complete work on the makeover by November 2019.
