Wofford baseball left out of NCAA Tournament after tournament loss

Wofford baseball's extended holiday weekend got even worse Monday less than 24 hours after being soundly defeated twice to miss winning the Southern Conference Tournament.

The Terriers were left out of the 64-team NCAA Tournament, listed among the "first four out" by the selection committee. North Carolina State, Old Dominion and Rutgers were the others.

Wofford went 42-16-1 (a school record for victories), had an RPI of 35 and won the Southern Conference regular-season title by four games. Needing just one win Sunday against UNC Greensboro to win the conference tournament and earn an automatic NCAA bid, the Terriers lost 10-2 and then 12-2 at Fluor Field.

After the game, Wofford coach Todd Interdonato remained confident his team's resume remained good enough to earn one of 33 at-large bids.

"I don't really have any reservations about it," Interdonato said Sunday. "This is a full-season thing and our RPI where it is and winning the regular-season championship, this (conference) tournament is separate from what we've done. We're an at-large team and have been a (NCAA) regional team the last two months and I think we're as in as in can be."

Two of the more notable teams that received at-large bids over the Terriers were Dallas Baptist (34-22 with an RPI of 23), which Wofford won 2-of-3 against on the road in early April, and Grand Canyon, 41-19 with an RPI of 50.

Wofford has only played in the national tournament once, in 2007, after receiving an automatic bid for winning the conference tournament.
