WOI TV anchor Sabrina Ahmed departs after 10 years

We Are Iowa TV Channel 5 news anchor and co-host of "This Week Iowa" Sabrina Ahmed departed the Local 5 News Team after 10 years.

Her long tenure came to an end April 22. The mother of toddler twins, Beau and Isabella, wanted to take this time to explore her opportunities as she raises her children, and wanted to be closer to her family.

“I have a lot of opportunities and I am excited for the opportunities for growth that exist. There were a number of things that lead for it to be time for a change,” Ahmed said. “I am looking forward to spending more time, more valuable time with my very young and precious family.”

The West Des Moines native joined the Local 5 news team in May 2013 as a photojournalist after attending the University of Kansas, where she studied broadcast journalism and economics.

Previously, she interned in Spain for Le Deluxe City magazine for three months and then 6News in Lawrence, Kansas. She worked at KLKN in Lincoln, Nebraska, before returning to the Des Moines area to join the Local 5 news team.

Ahmed received an Upper Midwest Emmy in the politics/government program category for reporting and anchoring Local 5’s “Medicine in the Making: This Week in Iowa Special,” in 2018.

Omar Waheed is a spring 2022 reporting intern for the Des Moines Register.
