Wolf Trap To Host Drive-In Movies After Canceling Performances

VIENNA, VA — Amid a canceled performance season, Wolf Trap is hosting a socially-distant alternative for families this August. The performance venue has planned drive-in movies from Aug. 5 to 9.

The movies will be held each night at 8:30 p.m. in the East Lot at Wolf Trap National Park. The theme of the series is musical movies. Sound will be provided through vehicles' FM radio. Parking lots will open at 7 p.m. and close at 8:15 p.m.

Here is the schedule:

  • Wednesday, Aug. 5: This Is Spinal Tap

  • Thursday, Aug. 6: Mamma Mia!

  • Friday, Aug. 7: Sing

  • Saturday, Aug. 8: Dreamgirls

  • Sunday, Aug. 9: Dirty Dancing

The price is $40 per vehicle, and walk-ins won't be allowed. Attendees will only be allowed to leave the vehicle's designated space to use restrooms, and face masks are encouraged when leaving the space. Attendees may bring a picnic along, but external deliveries and cooking on premises is not allowed.

The Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts had canceled its 2020 summer performance season due to the coronavirus pandemic. This is the first time in nearly 50 years that performances won't be held in the summer.

Even if venues like Wolf Trap would open, they would face stringent capacity and physical distancing restrictions under phase three of the Forward Virginia plan. The guidelines require venues would have to operate at 50 percent capacity with ten feet of physical distancing between performers and guests of different households.
